To pawn: hock a diamond ring.

I'm well-aware that ignorant people think the word it "hock" rather than "hawk".. Reuters is not a market peddler..

According to Webster's Collegiate, hock = pawn dates from 1883, and derives from Danish hok, prison. Nothing to do with ham hocks, or "hawk".

Where'd you get that notion, anyway? Been polishing it for forty years, I'll bet.

Hock and hawk have distinct meanings, and distinct etymologies. The only confusion is in your own mind, in your hurry to attack Reuters, who, for once, do not deserve such ire.
