Egyptian border policemen on Monday shot and killed a Palestinian south of Rafah, Palestinian Authority security sources reported. Another three people were wounded in the incident, the first of its kind since Israel completed its withdrawal from the Gaza Strip this morning.
The sources identified the victim as 34-year-old Nafez Atiyeh. They said Egyptian soldiers opened fire at a group of Palestinian men who were trying cross the border into Egypt.
Dr. Ali Mussa, director of the Khan Yunis Hospital, said Atiyeh had been shot in the head and died instantly.
In Cairo, a spokesman for President Hosni Mubarak denied that Egyptian soldiers had opened fire at Palestinians neat the border with the Gaza Strip.
Eyewitnesses said thousands of Palestinians from Rafah and Khan Yunis crossed the border with Egypt during the day to meet relatives and friends on the other side. They added that Egyptian soldiers stationed along the border did not prevent many families from crossing into the Egyptian part of Rafah.
The shooting apparently took place after gunmen from Hamas and Islamic Jihad approached Egyptian security control towers, the eyewitnesses added. "There were too many armed men in the area and that's why some of the Egyptian soldiers opened fire," said one.
In another incident, five Palestinian teenagers from Khan Yunis drowned in the sea near the former settlement of Neve Dekalim. Hundreds of Palestinians rushed to the beach on Monday morning, complaining that they had been prevented from swimming for more than four years.
Strange, I have listened to our MSM and have been convinced that it is only the dastardly Israelis who commits such foul acts.
Now we will all wait with bated breaths for Egypt to be condemned by the UN.
/sarcasm
To your lists.
They just wanted to do the jobs Egyptians won't do.
(well, somebody had to say it)
I thought that a big Pali beef was that Israel still controlled the border crossings. I guess Egypt does, too.
The Palis are now Egypt's problem; many suggested that this is the very reason that Sharon closed down Gaza to civilization.
I guess kvetching wouldn't really fit, would it? Monday morning, prime beach time.
If they didn't like the Israelis, they're really not going to like the Egyptians.
....and the Egyptians will more often than not shoot first and ask later.
I think if you put the Egyptian government on a polygraph, they would say that they would rather share a border with Israel than with a Palestian-controlled State. Not coincidentally, the Palestians lay claim to all of the Sinai. That would be a very entertaining "intifadah."
Prediction: Gaza becomes a part of Egypt proper.
Never, Egypt has no use for the Gaza terrorists.
The Egyptians wouldn't take it. That would require them to control the area or face state to state retaliation.
Every middle-east country loaths the idea of a palestinian 5th column rearing its head.
Its why the kuwaitis, jordanians, saudi's, and just about every other country around there doesn't allow them to permenatly immigrate there or buy land.
They supported the intifada simply because it kept the pals all in one confined area fighting the israelis, rather than having to worry about Arafat unleashing them upon other countries.
Funny how during the intifada which the middle-eastern countries milked for all they could to blame israel for everyone misery, they never talk about how palestinians helped cordinate Saddam's attack on Kuwait or how Arafat was kicked out of Jordan and 10,000 palestinians killed by the Jordanian king because Arafat tried to pull a coup with Syria's backing.
Saudi Arabia doesn't allow Palestinians to immigrate to the kingdom and make it virtually impossible for them to get work visas.
It goes on, and on, and on.....
which is exactly what it was until the later 60's. Now Egpyt wants nothing to do with the 6 million hillbillies living in the gaza strip.
We could make a show about that: :)
"Jihad Hillbillies"
This is just the tip of the iceberg. Egypt seems poised to clean house if the Palis started getting uppity.
Hey morons,
Build your own fooking state already!
They remind me of the NOLA thugs. Perpetual Welfare/Victimhood mentality.
..................
Would Israel have expelled the Palestinians if they didn't go intifadah? It seems to me that the safest path for these other countries would have been to encourage the Palestinians to get along with Israel.
Egypt will not be condemned. I, for one, am glad to see Egypt living up to its agreement with Israel. I just hope it continues.
