Civil rights activist Reverend Jesse Jackson visited the remaining evacuees at the coliseum , hoping to find out why they are leaving and where they'll end up.
Jackson and Congressman Bennie Thompson were looking for answers at the Mississippi Trademart.
Red cross officials spoke with Jackson about the transition process.
Thompson said he was assured by the Red Cross that no one will leave without a place to go.
Jackson Mayor Frank Melton was also in attendance and promised his help.
Jesse Jackson fears black evacuees will be overlooked when it comes to federal aid and future jobs.
He told the Associated Press that disaster victims should have first priority on the jobs and the contracts.
The founder of Rainbow Push Coalition talked with evacuees after delivering supplies.
Rev. Jesse Jackson said, "We forget Mississippi was hit harder (than New Orleans). It is a whole coastal region, it is Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. This is a federal disaster that deserves a federal organized response."
Jackson suggests housing evacuees in unused military bases in northern Louisiana and other parts of the county.
Jackson said he would meet Monday with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to push for
a plan to assist tens of thousands of people scattered across the country.
He told the Associated Press he was traveling through Mississippi with 25 tractor-trailers to deliver Rainbow/PUSH Coalition aid to hard-hit areas that have received almost no FEMA assistance.
Mississippi ping
Yes, to spread the word of victimization, hate, racism.
What he and a lot of dems are afraid of is that these people once off the rat plantation will not come back.
Yep
You sure know Jesse!
Now why would Jesse want to keep these people
off the Rat Plantation?
Money -- Jesse only gets paid if he delivers
their votes.
I wonder how much money Jesse has donated to help these people?
on the plantation not off
bad, bad, very bad
Target rich environment for poverty pimps
You know clearly there were more than just whites and blacks living in New Orleans.
Why is it the hispanics never use the race issue?
Why are the asians not using the race issue?
At some point you have to drop the "poor me" issue and get off your butt and take care of yourself.
There are so many blacks who grow up with drive in their step, rather than "oh woize me".
Men and wowen control their own destiny - good or bad.
Great, about time.
Jesse should be made to get a real job, and not
benefit from his racism.
"Jackson suggests housing evacuees in unused military bases in northern Louisiana and other parts of the county."
Jesse is once again in the vanguard. My father lives in eastern Oklahoma and when I talked to him as to if he had any effects from Katrina told me during the conversation, that evacuees are being housed at an old military base close by. Sorry I don't remember the name, but as usual, Jesse has ideas that have been impemented a week before.
Good questions
I just don't have any answers for you!!
Yes, Ole Porkchop Jackson at his best. He sticks out like a turd in the punchbowl.
Rev. Jesse Jackson said, "We forget Mississippi was hit harder (than New Orleans). It is a whole coastal region, it is Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. This is a federal disaster that deserves a federal organized response."
I didn't forget.
Well, these people are soooo disciminated against. I heard that the debit cards were given out and some ran out and bought $800.00 designer handbags.
Well, these people are soooo disciminated against. I heard that the debit cards were given out and some ran out and bought $800.00 designer handbags.
Has there been any documented proof of this? If so the person buying should be brought to national attention. I would love to see the face of someone that would buy a handbag with no place to live.
My interpretation of what Jesse Jackson said on the radio Sunday morning.
He said: Whitey forceably evacuated the Black Americans, took them by buses to other cities (out of state), and now Whitey will get all of the perks and privileges of rebuilding New Orleans.
Whitey won't EVEN ask for the Black American's help in the medial tasks, like clearing debris. Whitey is cutting the Blacks out of the reconstruction.
And, now, seemingly Whitey is tempting the Blacks to stay in the other cities by giving them housing and offering them jobs.
Oh, the injustice.
Can you imagine? It is SO UNFAIR.
