Duke to Mitt: Let voters in on plans
The Boston Herald ^ | 09/12/2005 | Maggie Mulvihill

Former Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis said Gov. Mitt Romney owes the voters who elected him in 2002 a quick and firm decision on whether or not he is going to seek re-election.

Dukakis said he announced he would seek the presidency in April 1987, just a few months after he had been sworn in for a third term.

"I didn't dance around it,'' Dukakis said. "There wasn't a lot of mystery about the whole thing.''

Romney has never committed to a firm run for re-election since he won the Corner Office nearly three years ago, though he recently boasted he would win by a "landslide.''

Romney acknowledged publicly in June he was considering a possible run for president, but has yet to make a formal announcement.

Dukakis was critical of Romney's many forays out of state.

"I wasn't running around doing events designed to enhance my national stature,'' Dukakis, who is now teaching at Northeastern University, said.

"I don't think it helps to run around the country trashing the state you are governor of at Republican events.''

A governor unsuccessful at home has little hope of convincing Americans to cast a vote in favor of his election to the White House, Dukakis said. "I was very determined that I was going to do my job, and I said to folks, `If I don't do my job at the state level, then you can forget my candidacy,' '' he said. "I won that nomination on long weekends.''

He announced in April 87, 19 months before the election. Currently we have 38 months, Mitt has time.

At this point, we can't blame Pee Wee as it's the lack of resolve among state legislators to comply with the repeal, which was endorsed again by referendum.

We are free to do as we are told.

Dear God, what color is the sky in Dukakis' world?

He is delusional! In his run for President, the dropped the ball on the Boston Harbor cleanup, failing to apply for federal funding, and left 43 communities surrounding the harbor to pick up the tab! Think about water bills in the thousands of dollars range.

Is that what he calls "doing my job at the state level?"

Here is a quote from the 1990 Washington Monthly:

"As a candidate, Michael Dukakis called Boston Harbor an open sewer. As governor he had the opportunity to do something about it but chose not to. The Environmental Protection Agency called his lack of action the most expensive public policy mistake in the history of New England. Now Boston Harbor, the dirtiest harbor in America, will cost residents $6 billion to clean. And Michael Dukakis promises to do for America what he's done for Massachusetts."

Does Romney really want advice from this man? If so, get a helmet and a tank!
