I took a long backpacking trip through the Smokies many years ago and never saw a bear. Then again, I had my noisy cousin along who never stopped talking...:)

We did the same thing, but found out after making a bunch of hikes miles to see the various waterfalls, that a lady (a month before) had been eaten by a Black Bear and her Cub, while her husband fished nearby.
Thats when I decided no more hikes without a gun.
