Not all are independent because they don't like either party. In some states, independents can vote in both primaries. In those states, some choose to remain independent. The reason I know is that some of my relatives do just that. To attempt to keep the worst of the worst out.

To attempt to keep the worst of the worst out.There is a certain attraction for voting for the most competent republican candidate in the primaries while also voting for the biggest of the leftist moon bat nut cakes in the democrat primaries. It helps keeps the republican candidates republican, and keep the democrat candidates unemployed.

We have open primaries. Things here are like they were in Alabama when I was a teenager. The real election was the Democrat Primary. The Fall election was a foregone conclusion.
If there is a good and possible Repub candidate, then try to line up a beatable 'Rat. Otherwise pick the best of litter or vote against the incumbent 'Rat.
