Maybe Dick Swaab is a little too close to his good friend Homer Phobic.

"In a study on the hypothalamus, Swaab said a person's sexual preference is decided in this region of the brain.

That proves just how much of a joke this study is. How much does anyone want to bet that 99% of DUmmies believe this?

In a study on the hypothalamus, Swaab said a person's sexual preference is decided in this region of the brain. It also influences a person's predisposition to aggression, depression and symptoms associated with schizophrenia.

Why is schizophrenia considered a mental disorder whereas homosexuality isn't?

The headline was NOT "Fags Make Lesbian Babies".

" Aw heck, you gotta give 'em credit for tryin'. :~D"

I just wonder why, after hundreds of years of people smoking, every woman isn't a lesbian. Less people smoke now, but we have more lesbians. Could that mean quiting smoking makes more lesbians? You can publish my findings on the web if you like.

Why is schizophrenia considered a mental disorder whereas homosexuality isn't?

Schizophrenia is considered to be a mental illness because persons with this illness are unable to live stable, productive lives; often requiring care or protection.

Homosexuality was removed from the list of mental illnesses because, based in part on research of Evelyn Hooker, it was determined that most homosexuals are able to live stable, productive lives (e.g., they are able to have successful careers). When this was done in the early 1970s, there were many psychiatrists who disagreed with this. There are still many psychiatrists who disagree, citing high rates of promiscuity, sexually-transmitted diseases, depression and substance abuse by homosexuals.

By the way, I recall reading that most schizophrenics are smokers, that there seems to be something about nicotine that actually helps schizophrenics.

Or will it get the lunatic "kill the fags" types to join forces with anti-smoking zealots?

(I'm saying this as someone who is adamantly anti-tobacco and has gotten in trouble for adding keywords to Morford threads and posting pictures like this and this)

I hadn't even realized that it said that, aggression, depression and schizophrenia are all universally considered mental disorders, yet homosexuality is a "lifestyle." This study clearly indicates that it is a mental disorder, which was how the medical community categorized it until the early 1970's.

You have a good point there, all joking aside. Many mental disorders are proven to be located in the hypothalamus, either from neuron damage or defect.

I'd love to see a study where the rate of child sexual abuse was correlated with the rate of homosexuality, especially amoung lesbians.
As I've posted before, I've known many people who claimed to be lesbians. All of them said they feel as if they've been this way as long as they can remember. All of them also were sexually abused as very young children.

Wow, this will cause a major problem for the democrats.

Do they piss-off their biggest contributors (trial lawyers)by stopping the anti-smoking campaign?

Or do they piss-off their third largest voter block by refusing to promote the breeding of lesbians?

The reason you get in trouble is because just as many people who don't smoke die from diseases seen in those and those pictures.
Cigarette smoking is a usefull tool for government however, because it deflects investigation for the real causes of these health problems, like breathing all that asbestose brake dust and other when jogging along roadways, anor just breathing the air.  Some people are mose succeptable to disease than others, it's a fact of life. Many smokers, a very high pecentage actually life to old age, in their 90's and more.

The logical response to research of a controversial nature is to repeat the experiment and see if additional repetitions yield similar results. In this case, that means collecting data on women, who smoked during pregnancy, and women, who did not smoke during pregnancy. The data, for each group, are then compared. Perhaps, the subsequent data comparisons will yield similar resuilts obtained by Swaab, and perhaps not. Either way, we have learned something.

The main criteria are:

1. Use representative samples, totally at random, to eliminate bias.

2. Use large enough sample sizes to increase the resolution of the experiment. Remember, the experiment is looking at the means (averages) of the distribution. The standard deviation of the mean is inversely proportional to the square root of the number of observations, so a sample size of 100 will have a standard deviation 1/10 of the mean as thatfor a sample size of 10. The big limitation on increasing the sample size and improving the resolution of the experiment is the cost of the larger sample size.

This stuff just can't be made up, ... can it?

Apparently not. After I stopped laughing over Dick Swaab's confidence inspiring name, I went to the website and found the Netherlands Discussion > Dutch News discussion forum. Check this out

Borrow a homo from the library
22/08/2005 10:37:00

BEST (ANP) - the library in Almelo will lend more than just books in September. You can also lend homos, gypsies and Muslims. A Swedish librarian gave her Dutch colleagues the idea.

She wants to breakdown stereotypes with her project, which is called "forget the prejudice".

In Almelo, library visitors could for instance 'borrow' a Muslim woman, complete with headscarf, from the local asylum seeker center for an hour and ask her questions that they are normally don't dare to ask. The threshold is low, said Henk Krol, chief editor of the Gay Krant [newspaper]. "It bring people closer to one another." Krol has spoken to the director of the Almelose library, Jan Krol.

The director, who during his free time is a chairman of homo interest group COC in Twente and de Achterhoek, wants to lend out 10 persons. The visitors could take 'their' minorities of choice to the café next to the library.
