Agreed, the existing site (save for the neighboring vending machine graveyard) is profound in that it's striking to visitors how such a desolate location can be the site of such a horrific terror attack. To replace that atmosphere with of all things a symbol of the very religion which wrought such hatred is appalling.

Absolutely. Maybe inscribe the names of the heroes on the monument as well.
What sickens me most is the "embrace" part of the monument name. For crying out loud, we are honoring these heroes because they were fighting Muslims, not embracing them.
Where the heck did this "embrace" nonsense come from? You don't win a war by embracing anyone.
