[ The cosmetics company wants to plan their hair-products line. They hope to predict demand by identifying what color hair men prefer in women, and they assume that the women will spend money on products to achieve that look. It might work; the "beauty" market has never been a rational one! ]

A lot of women follow trends. Once the trend starts it doesn't matter what started it, or whether it makes any sense. (Just look it all the pudgy women wearing low-rise pants and cut-off tops, for example.)

Men follow trends, too, of course, but the vast majority of hair-color products are sold to women.
