I tried making this point about mutual aid societies to a liberal and the government basically putting them out of business.

To a liberal its not about what works, its about how good they feel. Thats why I don't understand why they prefer public charity over private charity. Likewise, since I'm already being forced to give over $1000 from my tax money to katrina relief, I see no reason to give a dime more.
