Sean Penn: Hero In New Orleans

September 10, 2005 2:31 a.m. EST

Joanna Wypior - All Headline News Staff Reporter

New Orleans, Louisiana (AHN) - Actor Sean Penn has been hailed as a hero and a huge helpful hand, saving up to 45 people in hurricane-torn Louisiana, despite finding and having to deal with a hole in his boat last week.

"I witnessed him rescuing up to 40 people," presidential historian and author Douglas Brinkley told the New York Daily News. "He was up to his waist in toxic muck...I'm not going to comment on Sean's trips to Iraq or Iran, but in this case, he was an American hero."

During an interview on CNN's Larry King Live, Penn said there was not enough being done to help to victims of Hurricane Katrina.

"Most of the National Guard presence was in the air," Penn says. "They were doing a great job, those that were there. But there weren't enough there."

"Many of them could 'save'themselves. I know someone who was there to do work with a bobtail truck and heard a bunch of people shouting for him to get them out. He gave them a ride out and ,the water was only knee-deep and the dry land was barely a 1/2 mile away. He was amazed at their inability to help themselves."

Right, Most could have simply walked out on ther own. Even non swimmers...provided they didnt step in a deep hole. A stick to probe with could have helped avoid those. Its not like there was much of a current to sweep anyone off their feet.

An open wound and infection from the dirty water would be the biggest risk. Probably 10 of thousands could have simply walked the hell out of NO.

Ferrying people in a boat through calm shallow water really isnt a rescue imo. Most of those were probably no swimmers who let their fear of drowning over rule their common sense.

Having pictures taken of his boat from another boat tells me this was more photo op than rescue. Looks like 2 boats, one for the rolling cameras and one for a prop. I find it hard to buy into the rescue for rescue purpose. I'm sure there were many Bubba's with their bass boats in the area that were just itching to get in there to do the job of rescuing.

Even though it was rough going at first and we had our fair share of poking fun at him I'm Impressed the man has a heart and guts to match.

It's easy to sit here on my butt and critique but gotta give credit where credits due sean's proven to be more than just a hack he actually cares i think !

Very true, I do wonder how many more he could have saved without his photographer and PR crew in the boat.

"According to Rhandi Rhodes he was just trying to get their attention."

Well, he certainly picked the right weapon to do that.

12 gauge shotguns tend to do that. lol

Thanks, I didn't know that. During the Clinton years I saw Brinkley a few times on blab shows and he seemed OK, but guess he went over to the dark side. Now he's just another lefty clown.
