HALFWAY, Md. - Ryan Brandt Young, a San Diego man and former Navy SEAL performing diplomatic security in southern Iraq, died Wednesday when a bomb destroyed his armored vehicle.
Young, 32, a native of Halfway, Md., served in the U.S. Navy for more than 13 years, including stints as a Navy SEAL and SEAL instructor, said his father, Greg Young.
Ryan Young was in Iraq as a security contractor for Triple Canopy Inc. of Herndon, Va. and was working with the Bureau of Diplomatic Security.
He was riding in the lead vehicle of a motorcade escorting someone from an airport to the U.S. Embassy in Basra, Iraq when the bomb went off, said his mother, Pam Young.
Three other Triple Canopy contractors - Ronald Hyatt of Calera, Ala., Robert McCoy of Refugio, Texas, and Robert Pole of Miller Place, N.Y. - were killed in the explosion.

Godspeed Ryan, thank you for your service and prayers for his family.
God Bless his family, he died doing what he wanted to do and he died to give us freedom. I am deeply honored.
Thank you for posting.
I was able to talk to my son tonight and had the task of telling him of Brandt's death. He was one of my son's instructors during BUD/S. Said that he was a really great guy. Very sad year for the SEAL community.
I was a good friend of Brandt's. We went to BUD/S together, served on the East Coast together, and taught in Dive Phase together at BUD/S as instructors. He was as good as they come and I miss him already. Very few people demonstrate his level of professionalism, friendship and skill level. Please send me information (brian_and_henni@hotmail.com or 703-975-0389) as to when and where his funeral service will be held so I may attend. Thank you. Brian
