Santorum has critical words for forecasters in the wake of Katrina
WITF FM 89.5 ^ | 9-9-05 | Damon Boughamer

(Washington) -- U.S. Senator Rick Santorum is suggesting that early mistakes in predicting the path of Hurricane Katrina may be a symptom of lost focus at the National Weather Service. Santorum, who introduced legislation earlier this year to curb the output of government weather forecasters, says tracking life-threatening weather must be central to what the agency is doing. 00149_ric09d.mp3 Asked about Katrina by WITF, Santorum described weather service warnings for Florida, where the storm first made landfall, as “not sufficient." Santorum’s bill instructs the government to abandon weather prediction and data reporting efforts that duplicate private-sector activity. He came under fire when it was revealed that the head of State College-based AccuWeather, which would benefit, has given his campaigns thousands of dollars.

Look like you're right. Santorum appears to be a conflicted man.

It turns out that the sum in question was $7000. Santorum is not only a whore, he's a cheap whore to boot.

He's just doing the bidding of his campaign cash contributors, wants to privatise the weather service.

This isn't a case of legitimate privatization. This is corrupt "crony 'capitalism'" of the sort that infested Russia after the fall of the USSR.

If the GOP can't find a decent candidate to take Santorum out in the primary, chalk it up as a lost Senate seat.

I'm sure politicians can do a much better job of hurricane-track forecasting.

How did Republicans manage to put such a huge crop of morons in office to pee away our money and liberties?

Vote Libertarian.

Now this loser claims that the NHC did an insufficient job when it comes to Katrina. The three day forecast track for Katrina was dead on. Mayfield calls the governor and the mayor up at their homes and begs them to evacutate N.O. WTF Santorum?

If Santorum manages to get people to believe his lie, he provides cover for Nagin and Blanco (who can then claim that they legitimately caught off guard).

Thanks a lot, Rick.

"I'll stay with the NHC, thank you."

For whatever reaon, the National Weather Service/NHC/TPC seem to be a rare example of an efficient bureaucracy. I have a feeling it is because the people who work in it are completely fascinated by what they do.

OTOH, it may be a high pressure job, seems like the top dogs change a lot. Max Mayfield may be staying longer than most, though. My favorite was Dr. Neil Frank, that guy clearly loved his topic.

Good find. Since when does Santorum think that weather is totally predictable? Or controllable? Or predictable?

These storms are very unpredictable and wreck havoc at sea as well as land and people have a tendency to forget it. Thanks for spotting the story an putting it up.

Men like Santorum, no matter what party they belong to should be voted out. He just wants to hear his own voice...

Why are you calling someone names? Just because they are new to the board. Totally uncalled for.

Just because you don't agree with this person does not mean that you can call him/her a troll. Everyone has an opinion and is entitled to it and to voice it whether or not you agree with them.

A non-story? Don't you think it is the beginning of another monumental waste of money by Congress?

And they have been trying to predict weather accurately for how many centuries?
