Some of Time's sources are revising and extending their remarks. An excerpt:
Claudia Deakins, Edmond's director of marketing and public relations, was quoted in the Time article as saying that Brown was not a manager but more like an intern. Brown was assistant to the city manager in Edmond from 1977-80.
However, this morning, Deakins disputes Time's quotes attributed to her.
"I spoke with two reporters from Time Magazine Thursday. I answered questions about the City of Edmond, the organizational structure and role of the city manager and his staff. My comments were in the context of the organization as it functions today. I explained that my employment with the city of Edmond began in 1997, several years after Michael D. Brown's employment by the city and that I could not speak to the specifics of the organizational structure as it was during that time. I also explained that I could not I speak to the details of Mr. Brown's role within the organization.
"The only people who can speak with authority with regard to Mr. Brown's position in the organization are those who were at the City of Edmond during that time and worked with Mr. Brown, such as the city manager or members of the city council.
"I regret any misunderstanding that may have occurred as a result of my comments."
This was reckless reporting.
WASN'T EMPLOYED.
As a FOX news commentator pointed out, Mike Brown oversaw FEMA's efforts in four hurricanes last year and received mostly praise for his work.
I knew something was up with that Edmond story...for some reason it just did not sit right with me.....
I knew Jason Blair would show up again.
Rathergate all over again.
That can't be repeated enough. I think it was a mistake for Bush to cave to the press.

I agree that is probably true. And Brown probably did as best he could for Katrina and response may not have been any different than for earlier hurricanes. However, Katrina was probably the biggest disaster in U.S. history. Brown keeps Director job (for now), he is just not leading the Katrina rebuilding efforts. It is a huge job going forward and Bush is putting the best person is place for now.
I can't wait till reporters start digging into Nagin and Blanco. Still waiting......Still waiting.....
When I was growing up, my Dad wouldn't allow Time in our house. Nothing has changed in 40 years.
"Rathergate all over again."
Well, we can all get some pleasure from knowing that for the past week, Gunga Dan has been sitting in the dark in his home punching the wall over and over because he does not get to cover Katrina.
Time used a source who didn't work for the city when Brown was there...
Misquoting? Or maybe just "making it up out of wholecloth"?
Problem was that Brown was being crucified by media and becoming the face of the government. The press was not concentrating on any other story accept Brown. Brown was actually becoming a major distraction from the recovery effort.
Very unfair and not deserved but it is what it is.
I don't even know where to go anymore to complain. I just got hung up on by ABC Newsroom when asked why they don't report on the State of LA not letting in the Red Cross. The hurricane is only about Bush and Brown.

"my Dad wouldn't allow Time in our house"
And consequently, none of you ever got any older. :)
OTOH, I have heard very negative comments about Brown from officials in Florida in regards to his managing those disasters.
badabing!
