9/11 Loans: Even local hair salons got money
Seattle Times ^ | 9/9/05 | Dirk Lammers and Frank Bass

The government's $5 billion effort to help small businesses recover from the Sept. 11 attacks was so loosely managed that it gave low-interest loans to companies that didn't need terrorism relief — or even know they were getting it.

And while some at New York's Ground Zero couldn't get assistance they desperately sought, companies far removed from the devastation — a South Dakota country radio station, hair salons in Monroe, a Virgin Islands perfume shop, a Mukilteo pet-grooming shop and more than 100 Dunkin' Donuts and Subway sandwich shops — had no problem winning the government-guaranteed loans.

That's nothing in comparison to how generous FEMA is with the money for the evacuees.

BUT at least it was in the form of a loan (on the brighter side;) but these evacuees aren't getting loans these are freebie handouts!

While the majority of Katrina victims will feel it's the worst thing that ever happened to them. For a large number, it will be the best thing that ever happened to them.

How could you cover a subject like this and not report the default rate for pre-9/11 and post-9/11 loans? The default or delinquency rate of different vintages could tell you if there was a wave of fraud in response to the availability of this pool of money.

Journalists!

They are ONLY complaining because it wasn't wet-willie who got to slop out the pork!

We need to simply destroy all alphabet agencies and useless gagencies immediatelly - beginning with the Dept of Ed and the IRS - then elect all brand-new, never in politics, senators & representatives and ignore the squawking from the current crop of pigs-at-the-trough.

I would go for simply trashing every law written since the ratification of the first 10 Amendments and this time start over with the same common sense this nation began with.

There really is no reason for laws that are more wordy than the 10 COmmandments.

"gagencies" was a typo -- but I like its implications better!

Good grooming is important.

Next you'll object about those grants to telephone santizers
