I think you're right. It's been SO long since we've thought of each state as sovereign instead of some division of the federal government.This is a great civics lesson - unfortunately many people had to die to catch the attention of most of the US residents.

And yet, President Eisenhower did just that when he sent the 101st. Airborne Division into Little Rock, AK, in September of 1957 to enforce the US Constitution.
