If you will not buy a weapon for yourself, then buy ammunition to contribute only to good guys. Never become dependent on others because you may not find help. It's also the caliber of choice for backwoods deer poachers and mafia hitmen.

However, both of those classes of scoundrel specialize in head shots -- not the sort of thing that's going to happen in the heat of panic in a sudden "encounter". For real world applications, you need something that will stop an assailant with a center-of-mass strike.

For that, .45ACP is the ticket.
