SIERRA VISTA - Students at Buena and Tombstone high schools, plus several other schools, have come up with fund-raisers for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

In Tom Heller's chemistry class at Buena, students are using a sticky piece of canvas to help hurricane victims.

"I don't allow chewing (gum) in my class. I have (students) put it on the gum board. I call it gum art," Heller said. "I taped off the corners so we could frame it," he said of the 81/2-inch by 11-inch canvas that displays a colorful and oddly shaped array of chewing gum.

Heller said he had planned to sell the gum art on E-Bay as a way to make money for his chemistry classes. But after Hurricane Katrina struck Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, he and the students decided to use the art piece to raise money for Katrina victims. He said E-Bay has special links to hurricane relief.

Buena's Key Club is collecting money during lunch periods. Donna Avina, school district spokeswoman, said the club had collected more than $500 during the first two lunch periods Tuesday. Buena has three lunch periods.

Meanwhile, students at Tombstone High School who are in the Youth Transition Program are collecting new or used items in good condition to sell at the Lions Club Swap Meet on Highway 90 on Sept. 24 and Oct. 1.

Mary Gardner, the school's transition specialist, said the Lions Club has donated space to the students. "We also will have a container set up at the swap meet for anyone who would like to donate cash," Gardner said.

To arrange for pick up of larger items, make a cash donation or to ask questions, call Gardner, Teresa James of Sheila Dahoney at 457-2215, extension 5204.

Apache Middle School students in Sierra Vista are doing "Read-for-Relief," a project that starts today in the school library.

The middle school students will get sponsors to pledge any amount of money for every 30 minutes an individual student spends reading.

Principal Jeff Spencer said proceeds from the school's next social, Sept. 30, will donate to the relief effort. Homerooms are challenging each other to see which can raise the most money through donations.

The school's alternative classroom environment program will be writing letters to various businesses to form partnerships with Apache Middle School to help raise funds, Spencer said.
