Ford recalls 3.8 mln pickups, SUVs

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Ford Motor Co., in one of the biggest recalls ever, called back about 3.8 million pickups and SUVs due to a faulty speed-control switch that could cause fires.

The recall covers the 1994-2002 model years' Ford F-150, Expedition, Bronco and Lincoln Navigator vehicles.

The Ford F-150 pickup truck is the best-selling vehicle in the U.S., with consumers buying 90,388 in August -- a 6.3% increase from a year ago despite surging gas prices.

During its investigation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford (F: news, chart, profile) said it found that brake fluid could leak through the speed-control deactivation switch and potentially corrode electrical components, which could eventually cause overheating and a fire at the switch.

The auto manufacturer will install a fused wiring harness to act as a circuit breaker to remedy the potential problem, it said.

"Our customers can be confident that this action will prevent a speed control deactivation switch fire," said Ray Nevi of Ford's safety department.

Ford said it would contact owners of these vehicles by mail immediately.

In afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange, shares of Ford added 7 cents to $10.03, bucking an overall decline in the auto sector.

Lawyers out to KILL more American jobs and companies!

Unfortunately many freepers also presecribe to that "100% fault free or nothing" liberal mantra of the "ideal world of gaia" and agree that everything you buy should last forever with ZERO problems and if something ever wears out, it had to be defective to begin with.

prescribe? damned brain! I think that's right.

The headlight switch on my 76 Dorf F100 was like that
shorted out and started the dash on fire...

My 95 GMC 1500 was even more fun...punched it away from a stop light and the drivers seat unbolted sending me upside down into the back seat...recovered just in time to keep from plowing into a telephone pole

They are so lucky I hate lawyers almost as much as doctors..:)

Why did they put the cruise control deactivation switch on the master cylinder? I thought this was on the brake pedal shaft with the brake light switch.

Oh, well now that FoMoCo owns Jaguar maybe they're using Lucas electrical systems (I once owned a Triumph Spitfire).

Actually I do expect zero problems from a new or nearly new vehicle. That's why I buy Toyotas. I've owned Fords in the past and I'll never own one again. I still end up driving one as a company truck though and it only reinforces my opinion of their low quality.

Good question, but lots of vehicles have both the brake light and cruise control switches on the master cylinder these days. If the switch is properly designed, it won't leak, and hydraulic switches are less likely to go bad than mechanically operated ones.

The switch on these fords was a bad design or a good design poorly made.
