Iran Tries to Bribe U.S. with Oil

Iran will send the United States 20 million barrels of crude oil to help it overcome the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, if Washington waives trade sanctions, a senior Iranian oil official said.

In a gesture that mirrors American aid offers after a devastating 2003 earthquake in Iran, Tehran's envoy to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries announced his government would ship up to 20 million barrels of oil to the U.S., state radio reported late Tuesday.

"If U.S. sanctions are lifted, Iran is prepared to send that quantity of oil to America," the radio quoted Hossein Kazempour as saying.

U.S. officials couldn't immediately be reached for comment, but there were no signs that the U.S. policy toward Iran was about to change. Last week the Iranian Foreign Ministry offered to send relief supplies to the American Red Cross; Iranian newspapers reported that no response had been received.

Iran's offers reciprocates the goodwill that the United States displayed after an earthquake flattened the southeastern Iranian city of Bam in 2003, killing more than 26,000 people. The United States flew in emergency supplies, which were gratefully unloaded at an Iranian airport.

The Bam gesture did not, however, lead to an improvement in relations.

The United States and Iran have had no diplomatic relations since militants stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and held its occupants hostage in 1979. Washington then imposed a range of sanctions on Iran.

The United States accuses Iran of sponsoring terrorism and secretly trying to build nuclear bombs - charges that Iran denies.

Hurricane Katrina has severely disrupted U.S. oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and reduced the country's refining capacity by more than 10 percent.

I don't remember the U.S. saying "we'll ship aid if you stop making nukes!"

Aaaahhhhh....

I don't know.

Perhaps we should consider their offer a little more closely, not so much for the oil, which would be nice, but more for the opening of communications. Iran is more likely to implode due to their internal issues and working with them might actually help bring that about.

Or not. What would happen if the trade embargo was lifted? Would any of the benefit actually trickle down to the masses or would it just further enrich those at the top?

its amazing how most people in this country do not get this. the media really has everyone trained well. oil is cheaper now than it was right before the hurricane hit, when gas prices were averaging about $2.70 across the country. all the oil in the world wont help us now if we cant refine it.

I have yet to hear one word from the MSM about our refining capacity. It is always about the price of oil.

I'm willing to negotiate.

They offer 20 million barrels.

I'd counter with 20 million barrels per day for each day the sanctions are waved, and they send two weeks worth upfront in earnest.

I would imagine that the US is awash in oil just now.

What we need is about two dozen more refineries, a permanent removal of all of the stupid regional gasoline standards, and we need to start drilling for oil and natural gas in the US (we know where it is, we just need to get it).

If you think like they do in religous terms
it is not their oil but God's oil

He can give it to whoever he pleases....

According to Islamic spiritual rules...who ever wins the battle is the one God favors..
