But being so geeky, he was getting more from Mary Anne and Ginger (and probably Mrs. Howell--now that I'm 52 she doesn't look so bad) than he ever got back in civilization. Mr. Howell was a married man, so of course he wasn't available, and the Skipper had Gilligan. That left the Professor with some pretty large-scale duties.
