Several years ago, while working as a window clerk at the main post office in town, I got to see one of these 'feeding frenzys' first hand.

There was a rumor being spread that a class action suit had been filed and settled against a manufacturer of baby formula and all you had to do to get your share of the free money was to mail in a copy of your baby's birth certificate. We heard that the monetary awards were anywhere from $1500 to $25k!

The majority of these women were black and from the inner-city. They were also wearing leather coats, had their nails professionally done and driving vehicles far better than mine. (And I'm pretty sure none of them had ever actually paid for baby formula as it is free through WIC and other Gov't. programs.)

This went on for 2 weeks and as the deadline grew closer, the crowd got uglier and ruder (and I'm being polite in the description). People were actually express mailing (about $12 at the time)their copies. By time I left work Friday night, I was seething (which is not normal for me). I spent the better part of the weekend being pissed off at the system and down-right wrongness of the situation.

When I got to work Monday, we found out that the whole refund thing was a hoax. I couldn't stop smiling all day!!
