While she was aware of the popular theory that “America’s chief inheritance from its frontier past is ‘aggressiveness,’” Cox writes, she considered that theory “‘nonsense.…On the frontier you have to be polite to your fellow men, and it won’t get you anywhere to be aggressive to a blizzard.’ What worked out West wasn’t aggressiveness but ‘a peculiarly individual, mind-your-own-business confidence.’”

Very interesting.

Great article - thanks!

Interesting article. I have to say that "Reason" is an inappropriate name for a libertarian magazine, considering that libertarianism rejects the use of reason as a tool in directing society. A good mag all the same, I think.

They say Shakespeare's daughter was illiterate. Sometimes I'm glad we don't know much more than that about him.
I wish we knew less about the personal lives of these 3 women.

The personal life of a genius is a lot like that housing project that everybody befouled with their "contributions."

For that reason, the personal life of a genius needs a Roark to blow it up.

The personal life of a genius...needs a Roark to blow it up.

I do realize this must nauseate the existentialists. I just think the output of a genius is more authentic than his personal life. :)
