The only firearm I own is a small ruger .22

What kind of multi purpose firearem would you suggest I add to the collection?

I would like to have one for protection at home or in a catostrophic event like the hurricane, and/or survival situations, like needing to kill a varmint for food.

for a good, all-around carbine, check out the Kel-Tec Sub2000. It comes in two flavors, 9mm and .40cal. I have the 9mm so I can shoot the same ammo out of my Hi-Power ... :)

if you're looking for a multipurpose, shtf gun, get a shotgun. preferably 12ga (if you can handle the recoil)
a shotgun is the most versatile weapon, the most forgiving, and the most likely to have ammo available everywhere. and it's fairly simple. you can hunt anything for squirrel to people to grizzly with it, depending on the shell you use. and if you run out of ammo, it makes a fairly effective club.
