Katrina vs. Halliburton: Yes, blame Bush

The "Blame Bush" crowd will be thrilled with this bit of news. Halliburton subsidiary KBR has begun to repair port facilities for the Navy along the Gulf Coast after Katrina. Some of the details from the KPRC-TV/Associated Press story:

The subsidiary, Kellogg, Brown & Root Services Inc. of Arlington, Va., was awarded the competitive bid contract last July to provide debris removal and other emergency work associated with natural disasters. (emphasis added)

This is also not the first time KBR has done post-storm cleanup:

The company has provided similar work after major disasters in the United States and abroad for more than 15 years, including in Florida after Hurricane Andrew.

The requisite Dick Cheney reference is also included:

Vice President Dick Cheney headed Halliburton from 1995 to 2000, and Democrats have questioned whether the company has gotten favorable treatment because of his connection.

It is only a matter of time now. President Bush has already been blamed for everything associated with Hurricane Katrina, including causing the storm, the flooding in New Orleans, and slow relief efforts because victims were black and poor. This Halliburton news finally ties it all together for the conspiracy theorists.

Just what is the "Bush World Weather Domination Theory?" Here is what we have so far:

The President did not sign the Kyoto Accords so as to destabilize the global climate, thus causing massive storms to hit the country. This, in turn, would provide a chance to reduce the populations of "undesirables" (i.e. blacks, poor) with slow disaster response while providing financial gain for his friends at Halliburton with storm reconstruction. The jitters and disruptions caused in the oil markets would spike the price, thus further enriching the President's oil connections. Combine all of this with the "illegal" war (for oil!) in Iraq, the "stolen" (hanging chads!) elections that put Bush in office and you have one of the most evil criminal masterminds ever to inhabit the White House.

Sound ridiculous? The sad fact is that there are those on the Left who subscribe to various parts of this scenario. You may scoff, but there appears to be enough material here for another Michael Moore "documentary." Stay tuned.

Here's another potential crackpot conspiracy theory. I am good at dreaming these up, since I wrote a novel about conspiracies and had to research conspiracy theory literature for my book. I know how the crackpots think.

The evil Republicans steered the weather machine so that would create a hurricane that would cause the levees to break in New Orleans. They knew that the LA and local government would not do an effective evacuation, and that looters and thugs would cause mayhem and death and misery.

They intentionally refrained from shooting looters so that the lawlessness would outrage the American public and we would demand that in the future the Federal government parachute in regular military with orders to take no prisoners and brook no dissent. In short, they arranged all this so that in the future we would not only tolerate authoritarian brutality. We would demand it.

Heck, I hope no lurking DUmmies see this, or they might think it is true.
