Bob Denver, whose portrayal of goofy first mate Gilligan on the 1960s television show "Gilligan's Island," made him an iconic figure to generations of TV viewers, has died, his agent confirmed Tuesday. He was 70.
Denver, who underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery earlier this year, died at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in North Carolina, according to agent Mike Eisenstadt. Denver's death was first reported by "Entertainment Tonight."

The Greaseman just played a version of the Gilligan Island Theme sung to "Stairway to Heaven".

He was also in some classic 50s SF films: "It Came From Outer Space", "This Island Earth" and "Attack of the Crab Monsters".Not to mention "The Space Children", where he played a nasty drunk done in by aliens. Hilariously spoofed by Mystery Science Theater 3000, as was "This Island Earth"
I always thought the Professor and Mary Ann had a thing going on, as did the Skipper and Ginger and Gilligan and Mrs. Howell. And poor old Thurston was clueless.

I too thought Dobie was better than Gilligan's Island.
I actually think G I was one terrible show but then again, I usually watched it so maybe they were doing something right. I think part of it, was the idea of a group shipwrecked was really good, and the cast was also good. I was a teenager when it was on and I must admit I had my fantasies of being shipwrecked with Mary Ann.
Actually "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" was unlike any show I have ever seen before or since, and was really good.
