Science fiction? Not quite -- Company wants to launch suborbital flights from Florida
St Petersburg Times ^ | 09/05/05 | KRIS HUNDLEY

Eric Anderson's company has taken two wealthy tourists on $20-million trips to the International Space Station using Russian equipment and launch pad.

Now he's preparing to offer hour-long, suborbital flights to the public for a mere $100,000. And he'd like to base the operations in Florida.

Anderson is president and chief executive of Space Adventures, which has offices in Arlington, Va., Moscow and now near the Kennedy Space Center. He pitched his business -- and bold request for incentives -- to members of the state Commission on the Future of Space and Aeronautics at their meeting in Tampa last week.

Calling space tourism a "multibillion dollar market," Anderson asked state leaders to provide his company with facilities, tax incentives and help negotiating the thicket of federal and military regulations regarding use of air space for a rocket launch.

The state of Florida should not be persuaded into providing subsidies for private space tourism.

I have a gut-feeling that this company, or one like it, will be the next Wal-Mart, Microsoft, or IBM. As technology advances, the price tag will come down. Flights will be affordable to more and more people.

If I wasn't a poor college student right now, I'd take a chance and invest in one of these startups.

I'm not a big fan of the corporate world but I agree that they'll be the ones to get us into space. I kinda like the idea of rockets covered with NASCAR style decals.

Those two spaced aliens were dropped off from their Mother Ships. The aliens didn't want those losers, either.

Don't think poor! If you have the vision the sky is definitely not the limit.

Fred Smith got a C- for his business paper which outlined an overnight delivery system. Today Smith, FEDEX's founder, is a billionaire. What do you think of Smith's business prof's prescient grading of that paper!!!

Given the right incentives, I recommend a 100% capital investment credit for all capital and operational investments in space, Will see a growth in large and small space enterprises. COMSAT grew that way and so might FEDEX if it can invest in the FEDEX interorbit tug which would move things from Earth to LEO GEO and Lunar Orbit and beyond!

Exxon would build the tank farm at the LEO truck stop, (AKA the ISS) where Bigelow's motel is situated next to the truck stop and strip warehouses that you see around any market center or water port, airport and now space port.

By changing the miind set and getting NASA out of the way, then like Buzz LightYear we will all be Space Cadets and move out ..."To Infinity and Beyond!"
