CNN) -- The oil-rich nation of Qatar has offered the United States $100 million to assist in the humanitarian crisis triggered by Hurricane Katrina.

The state-run Qatar News Agency said Saturday that Qatar's emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, decided to contribute that amount for relief "and humanitarian supplies for the victims of this disaster."

The U.S. government has received offers of support from dozens of nations across the globe.

As of Friday, the White House had not accepted any offers, but Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the State Department was "working very closely with the Department of Homeland Security to match up what is available with what is needed."

There was no immediate word whether the United States would take Qatar up on its offer.

Sounds like a good deal to me. Qatar offers $100 million in aid and pockets $200 million in increased crude prices. Those SOB's are smart I tell you??????

And we probably will turn down the $100 million? Frankly, I am getting sick and tired of a sheikh controlling my life!

We could start by turning New Orleans into a giant prison for all the "Meth" monsters in the US!

Why are we not accepting any offers?

Who says we aren't?

Until we get the people relocated and the situation secure we have bigger fish to fry than telling people where to send the money. Our Government is not exactly set up to receive donations (unlike some third world countries).

The story says:

State Department officials have not yet said if any of these offers -- beyond specific offers of cash to humanitarian organization -- have been accepted.

Translation: If you give to the Red Cross (etc.) who are already set up to deal with this it will be a done-deal.

But the Government itself has to set up accounting infrastructures (bank accounts, accounting systems, comptrollers, etc.) to actually accept the funds. Money of the magnatude mentioned in the story is not just transfered via a Visa Card, or a check. Its usually handled by international bankers who specialize in moving huge sums.

Right now we do not need money. When individuals need houseing, clothes, food, and cities need new houses, levees, bulldozing, THAT will be the time this kind of money is needed.

Right now, the object of the game is get everybody out and safe, and fed, provide a place to rest their head tonight. America can do this out of pocket change. Its the aftermath, the long term costs that will be stagering.

The State Department said offers of help had been received from more than 50 countries, including:

Australia, Austria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Belgium, Canada, China, Columbia, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Germany, Guatemala, Greece, Guyana, Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Philippines, Portugal, South Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela.

Even Indonesia?

Venezuela's on there, too. Interesting.

YEp - deep seeded hatred showing on a worldwide scale towards the US...... Amazing how many countries who otherwise don't like the US, are still willing to help in some way....Maybe we are not the "great white Satan"???? Nahhh... some of those have alterior motives.

It's pretty scary to me. My question is, what the heck do they all want in return?

Yes Indonesia stepped up straight away they have offered some medical assistance and have instructed three army helicopter teams currently in the US for training to assist in the rescue effort. It's not much but it's not as if there's much that Indonesia can offer the US, what's important is that it is a sign of the goodwill and gratitude that Indonesia has for the magnificent aid effort that the USS Abraham Lincoln achieved after the tsunami.

I said at the time against the postings of many here that Indonesia is a natural friend of the US (glad to see that the Indonesian armed forces are again receiving training and equipment from the US) and that no matter what a handful of crackpot mullahs were saying the vast and overwhelming majority of Indonesians are very pro-Western and pro US.

They are a friend well worth having in a dangerous part of the world.

Uh Oh. Are you implying that people anywhere in the United States use drugs? If so...

What's the problem with that, just build a huge wall around it and throw 'em in. It's already a trash heap...a veritable "tweakers" paradise. They would be very happy there.
