"you are straining rescue resources by not evacuating."

I believe you have misunderstood me somewhere along the line.

1. I don't believe, nor it did I at the time, that the Super Doom move any sense.

2. I believe that if the same (or many more) buses had been used to evacuate further more lives would have been saved. Whoever we still have all most exactly the same problem in NO as we do today, because many, many people would have refused to get on those buses.

3. It's very likely that many buses would have been caught in the storm.

I'm very proud of Bush's performance. The Federal gov had no and has never had any role in evacuations.

You are not understanding. The city has a responsibility to deploy transportation resources to assist those needing help in evacuating. Especially those who cannot move by themselves, such as invalids, those in nursing homes, etc. If people don't want to get on the bus, that's fine. They have a choice and can bear the responsibility. There were NO buses deployed, rather they were protected. There was plenty of time before the hurricane arrived to get to these people and at least take them to high ground. They may have been uncomfortable but they would be alive. The buses have been saved. One enterprising young man went and got one and drove 100 people to safety in Houston.

Why Nagin was reluctant to call for a mandatory evacuation? This could explain why he needed his lawyers...

Advocates for the poor are indignant.

"If the government asks people to evacuate, the government has some responsibility to provide an option for those people who can't evacuate and are at the whim of Mother Nature," said Joe Cook of the New Orleans ACLU.
