Oh, I forgot about that movie, since I didn't ever see it.

I am becoming overwhelmed at the Hollywoodization of this disaster, and the stupidity of a great many of my fellow citizens, each of whom has a vote equal to mine.

I am beginning to think we need a voter DEregistration movement.

The plan for the New Orleans officials was "pray the storm misses us like Ivan."

If they had approved monies to ramp up the levees to withstand a category 5, first thing that would have happened is that people who didn't get their particular project through would have screamed pork; then there would have been a skimming based on who was going to get the contracts, and then there would have been lawsuits by enviromental groups who felt that they weren't saving the wetlands in a serious way.

And still the storm would have come and done its thing, because the lawsuits wouldn't have let them begin by now, and on top of that, NO wouldn't want to divvy up full matching funds, and there would have been a lot of local fussing going on (part turf wars, part wanting a piece of the action, part fiscal conservatives not wanting more debt, and various other interest groups getting their licks in).

Or maybe I'm just getting cynical in my old age.

Guess I'm really slow....

Sonar, how does this request on Aug. 28th by the Governor to Pres. Bush fit in the grand scheme of things?

Link to request:

Maybe you explained it in your thread, and I just didn't catch it.

Sounds like she was asking for federal help-- as the approaching storm would be beyond the ability of the state to handle it.

Trying to understand.... :)

Not likely to slow down anytime soon, either.

This could be an ongoing "drama" for a long time..actually I hope it does, for two reasons.

1. These people are gonna need help for a long time, and we can't forget in a week's news cycle.

2. That means something "worse" hasn't happened to take this off the front pages...if you know what I mean.

Just adding my thread to the bunch.
Why Didn't Louisiana Follow it's Required Emergency Plan?

Would that be the Emergency Plan prepared by Jamie Witt's company? The same Jamie Witt who is now advising Governor Blanco and Mayor Nagin (famous to be sure, as Lake Nagin is named after him personally) how to proceed with the recovery?

I never, ever watch Oprah----- Is she gonna give all of the refugees a new car???

Nope. She's going to encourage women to leave their husbands because this global warming thing was created by evil American men who don't care about their kids and provide no emotional support for their wives.

Is there a timeline anywhere that compares the response to Hurricane Andrew with the response to Katrina?

John Travolta is coming to "inspect" the refugees? What's that about? Is he bringing Tom Cruise along to inspect the prescriptions too?

I'm not going to another damn movie or listening to music by these *ssholes EVER AGAIN!!! WHO THE HELL DO THEY THINK THEY ARE?! They are IN THE WAY vying for their PHOTO OP! I just love it when know-it-alls try to tell everyone else WHAT THEY SHOULD DO!

Well for your information Louisiana politicians have not ever been know for their intelligence.

However with that said, they are very knowledgeable when it comes to graft and corruption.

I would imagine that this disaster has brought out all the corrupt masters.

Well some are prepositioning themselves for the big windfall from the government.

Jessie and Al baby come to mind.

I remember years ago they had a big county commissioner scandal in Oklahoma.

Many went to jail about 375 and new ones elected.

The joke around the courthouses was that all the new commissioners were sent down to New Orleans to learn how to effectively steal tax dollars with out going to jail.

Homeless Saints mull Baton Rouge, San Antonio or All Road Games

SAN ANTONIO The New Orleans Saints say they are considering three options where to play their home games this season -- L-S-U's Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, the Alamodome in San Antonio or at the stadiums of all their opponents.

Team officials say their first choice is Baton Rouge and their last choice is to play 16 road games this season.

The Saints open Sunday at Carolina. Their second game, which was supposed to be their home opener, already has been moved to Giants Stadium.

Coach Jim Haslett says L-S-U is his first option because he says he would like Saints fans to have the opportunity to see the team play.

Club officials and players are living in a hotel across the interstate from the Alamodome and will be practicing at high school fields in the area.
