Ummmm... why send money to fix the levees when the levee commission spends it to buy casinos instead of fixing the levee's?
Historic note: Was perusing the initial Katrina threads tonight, and ROFL almost as hard as I did upon reading the Sean Penn story today...--->Click
I'm sure it could have been better, but here's another thing to keep in mind.
The term FEMA is incorrectly taken to mean federal control. It is not. FEMA is a state/federal compact, wehre both sides have roles and responsibilities. It is typical for a "state FEMA official" to be in control of spending federal money and directing efforts. When it is said that FEMA denied entry into NOLA, the order came from a state authority, not a federal authority.
NEW ORLEANS -- Two more Jefferson Parish officials are being drawn into the corruption probe dubbed Operation Wrinkled Robe, according to a newspaper report.
The Times-Picayune reports that investigators have issued subpoenas to Parish President Aaron Broussard and 24th District Judge Kernan "Skip" Hand. (article continues)

Thank you so much. That is a great idea. Lotions would help too, if you have them. You have freepmail. This is just the kind of ideas that make FReepers special.
So sorry! In my rush to post before the next hundred ........:)
I get the impression that he is in a job and situation over his head and is afraid...therefore, he has to cuss and yell to cover for his fear...and appear tough.
Not gonna do any of the NO citizens any good now, though.
Oh, it was clear after listening to Fineman on MSNBC. I think it was Friday.
Well, now you've done it.
I have a copy of the National Response Plan on my desk at work; I had to review it to see if we would have any action if it was implemented.
If the entire document is read, in context, I believe you'll find that it does not give the federal government authority to barge into a sovereign state before an emergency has taken place.
Very dry read. I will have to reread now. Thanks alot.

I get the days thing on the clock, but the hours? Is the time supposed to be from when the eye passed over or something?
This is reminiscent of when the networks kept a nightly tally of the days since our hostages were held in Iran.
A wonderful woman from our little church is there with the Red Cross. She is suffering from heart condition herself, but refused our pleas to stay home. Keep Sue in your prayers.
"When it is said that FEMA denied entry into NOLA, the order came from a state authority, not a federal authority."
Well now, stuff like that helps to know! Thanks.
(Just to really settle my curious mind, is there a reference for that fact?)
If I never see that line again in any setting, it will be too soon. I blur out the rest of the post after seeing those words. Otherwise, great post.
"What husbands? I think I can count on the fingers of both hands the numbers of families I've seen ... mostly single moms and kids."
From a Knight-Ridder article today:
Single mothers headed 65 percent of New Orleans families living below the poverty line.
"If you're a single mother and poor, and you have a very low education and have trouble finding a job, getting back on your feet is harder than it is for married couples or people with more resources," said Sheila Zedlewski, the director of the income and benefits policy center at the Urban Institute, a non-partisan think tank in Washington. "They're going to need some significant support for quite a while to make a new life for themselves."

Katrina devastates all but leaves many of the poor in free fall
Overwhelmingly, anger turned on government officials.
"All I want to say to Mayor Ray Nagin is thank you for helping us," Yolanda McZeal, 43, said calmly, sarcastically and bitterly. "Governor Blanco, thank you for helping us. President Bush, thank you for helping us."
For a few minutes, the crowd chanted, "No more Nagin."
For Carey, the young mother walking away from the center, the disaster was divine retribution for the city's legendary corruption and crime. "The city is corrupt ... God is punishing New Orleans for all the (expletive) they're doing, killing each other."
But she had even less warmth for the police, whom, she said, she barely saw.
"The thugs and the criminals are the heroes. They're the ones that were saving us," she said. Stolen speedboats took her from her flooded neighborhood; stolen moving trucks brought her to the convention center. "The police were nowhere."
While many in the crowd spoke of their love for the city, Carey was having none of that.
"I have to pick up and start somewhere else," she said. Would she consider coming back? "Hell no."

I am getting pretty tired of this kind of silliiness.
