Yeah, look at this...
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Nine stockpiles of fire-and-rescue equipment strategically placed around the country to be used in the event of a catastrophe still have not been pressed into service in New Orleans, five days after Hurricane Katrina, CNN has learned.

Frustration about the federal response to Hurricane Katrina has reached Chicago City Hall, as Mayor Richard Daley today noted a tepid response by federal officials to the city's offers of disaster aid.
The city is willing to send hundreds of personnel, including firefighters and police, and dozens of vehicles to assist on the storm-battered Gulf Coast, but so far the Federal Emergency Management Agency has requested only a single tank truck, Daley said.

Yahoo: New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson offered Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco help from his state's National Guard last Sunday, the day before Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana. Blanco accepted, but paperwork needed to get the troops en route didn't come from Washington until late Thursday.

Louisiana begged for federal help on Sunday in a formal request

Preparing America
In the event of a terrorist attack, natural disaster or other large-scale emergency, the Department of Homeland Security will assume primary responsibility on March 1st for ensuring that emergency response professionals are prepared for any situation. This will entail providing a coordinated, comprehensive federal response to any large-scale crisis and mounting a swift and effective recovery effort. The new Department will also prioritize the important issue of citizen preparedness. Educating America's families on how best to prepare their homes for a disaster and tips for citizens on how to respond in a crisis will be given special attention at DHS.

The Gov of La did request FEMA to assist prior to land fall and Bush said the response was unacceptable.
If by "early on" you mean before the storm, yes, there was lots of coverage. After that, it was a blackout until the Dome was cleared.
You can bet your bottom dollar there will be lawsuits against the city of NOLA for wrongful death, based on failure to provide security. Don't know that the plaintiffs will win, but some will sue.
It sounds like you're insinuating that the state of Texas did this for money. Please tell me you aren't.
For two weeks - until Sept 14.
Don't forget that on Tuesday morning Katrina was still at tropical-storm strength and the eye was just then crossing the Mississippi/Tennessee border. The storm strength winds still extended out several hundred miles to where the pre-positioned material and personnel were at that point.
As an aside, in Florida we have a grape named Blanc du Bois. Have them growing on the vine here. It wins all sorts of wine awards too. Perhaps I shall rename my little vineyard here...
Please see my post at #481. Interesting links.
Again, I just want to get it clear in my own mind that the Federal gov't. did do things right.
Thanks for your replies.
Wrong.
I have a great idea on how to save time and money. Why doesn't ABC and SEARS just start a new tv show called "EXTREME MAKEOVER NEW ORLEANS".
They would have that city back up and running in 2 months.
you know, i was thinking the same thing 2 days ago, i googled extreme makeover and katrina and got nothing. I can't believe they haven't pounced on this yet, but they will!
"Inspect the refugees?"
Mayor Nagin is a lying chicken piece of crap!!!
He was asked on Nightline what he would change...did he say using the buses to evacuate people?
NO>>>> he said he would have started CUSSING sooner to get the attention of the White House!!!!
He is blaming everyone in the world but himself...
re: race...he said it for sure is a "class" issue..
He said this wouldn't have happened in Orange County, Ca., or Manhattan, New York...because they are upper class...
I KNEW I shouldn't watch this...I am gonna need my anxiety medicine tonight!!!
Something is going to have to be done about Joe Scarborough.
Thanks so much for this Snowball update. I hope it's the right dog. I felt such pain for that little boy who had the dog taken away, it kind of "personalized" the losses for me that so many thousands of people are experiencing.
He was not saying that on 60 Minutes.
He just may be bipolar.
We have a particularly noxious leftist columnist based in TX - I won't befoul this thread with her name. But I did read one of her columns that had a lot of truth in one statement. Talking about gabbing with other political writers on trips, she said "When it comes to telling stories, the only people who can compete with me are from IL and LA."
Your source?
It is all Bush's fault. I just saw a sign on the news basically insulting the President. Like he could have done anymore. And with so much damage, how do you have that much time to make a worthless sign?
You've only seen that the media has shown. Which is not very much.
Each State has been receiving money from the Department of Homeland Security for emergency preparedness -- which includes Satellite RADIOS for police and fire to communicate with one-another.
What happened to all the money that went to New Orleans?
