Pres. Bush needs to show his respect for blacks everywhere by appointing Justice Clarence Thomas as the first black Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He's young enough to hold the post for decades. I'm sure that choice would be lauded by the Leftist press and race pimps and the ACLU.

This is really an interesting scenario. It would be harder for the Dems to demonize two blacks at once (though, of course, they would look for dirt on Jesus, so it won't stop them).

Clarence Thomas is unqualified, really, for the spot he holds. His opinions never address caselaw, but are merely ideologically based opinions better suited for an op-ed page. He is not going to be Chief Justice. To nominate him as such would be nothing more than pathetic race-mongering.

Now, Scalia, on the other hand, would be an ideal chief justice. Most intellectually honest lawyers when confronted with a Scalia opinion must concede that, while they might not agree with Scalia, he makes a compelling argument. The same cannot be said of Clarence Thomas.
