I agree. As a pet owner, I would even be willing to pay some sort of deposite or cleaning fee on top of the room rate.

My pets are house-broken, but they do shed and that might be a problem for someone else that would use the room after us.

I am very fond of my pets but this just shows how the average person has lost every vestige of the survival instinct.

My sentiments exactly. Incidentally, can you imagine what it would be like at a crowded emergency shelter if everyone was permitted to bring his pet?

I was wondering about that. I called the local humane society to put my name on the list as a temporary "foster home" for pets of evacuees. I've yet to be called. Hopefully these people have found acceptable accomodations for them.

That's right. Shouldn't PETA be all over this? Shouldn't they be the ones setting up shelters and going door to door looking for abandoned "animal companions?" They are just one of many, many examples of leftist organizations that are so blinded by their ideology they no longer see the people or creatures they supposedly care about.

Yes, obviously that's the ideal solution, but not realistically available to everyone. Many of the people who ended up staying in the city had obstacles to evacuating in time -- no car, frail elderly people, etc. From what I can tell, there weren't any public buses taking people out of the city before it was too late, and it's not clear that they would have allowed pets anyway.

I am just amazed at how out of whack our priorities have become.

Yeah. Dogs and cats in the Superdome? No food for 5 days? BBQ, anyone?

Media Advisory -- Alert to Pet Owners in Slidell, La.: Come to Heritage Park to Claim Rescued Animals or Report Stranded Pets
Saturday September 3, 6:16 pm ET

NEW YORK, Sept. 3, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Noah's Wish, a not-for-profit organization that works exclusively to rescue and shelter animals in disasters, is rescuing animals from evacuated homes in Slidell, Louisiana. The pets are being housed at a temporary animal shelter and Noah's Wish is working with Slidell Animal Control to coordinate the rescue of hundreds of abandoned and stranded pets in the city of Slidell. The Animal Control building sustained extensive damage during Hurricane Katrina. Noah's Wish staff and volunteers on the ground do not have phone, cell phone or web access at this time and are unable to communicate outside the Slidell area. Noah's Wish is asking that pet owners from Slidell not call or send email, as communication is limited. Pet owners who live in Slidell need to come to Heritage Park to report a lost or stranded pet. Noah's Wish staff will be at Heritage Park from 8am to 7pm every day for at least the next 3 weeks. Pet owners must come in person to determine if their pet is at the shelter, as the number of pets being rescued is expected to reach the hundreds.

This temporary shelter will have the ability to house hundreds of animals. Trained Noah's Wish volunteers, veterinarians, and veterinary technicians will work around the clock to provide medical services, care and much-needed love and affection to these traumatized animals. Pet owners may pick up food and supplies from Noah's Wish volunteers in Heritage Park. Donations of pet food, blankets, dog kennels etc. may be left at Heritage Park.

``Yesterday, we found a Chihuahua sitting in a kitchen sink,'' said Terri Crisp, Founder and Director of Noah's Wish. ``The waters in the house rose so high, the poor little guy got swept into the sink, where he remained when the waters receded.'' The Chihuahua was taken to the temporary animal shelter where he was checked by a veterinarian and provided food, water and a much-needed warm bed. All animals coming into the shelter will be tracked and Noah's Wish hopes to be able to reunite owners with their four-legged family members.

``Noah's Wish exists to help people as much as we do pets,'' says Crisp. ``Temporary shelter for pets will be offered to residents who lost their homes and are unable to keep their animals with them in shelters or hotels.'' Noah's Wish also cares for wildlife. Yesterday, a baby squirrel was found among the rubble and was fed every four hours overnight by a volunteer. Trained Noah's Wish volunteers from around the country are taking time off work and paying their own expenses to travel to Louisiana to assist with pet rescue.

Donations are desperately needed and can be made at http://www.noahswish.org. Donations go directly to help the animals of this disaster and cash is preferred as it allows the organization to purchase the supplies needed. Questions should be emailed to info@noahswish.org or a message can be left at 530-622-9313.

Noah's Wish is a 501 c3 not-for-profit organization based in Placerville, California (near Sacramento). Donations may be mailed to Noah's Wish P.O. Box 997 Placerville, CA 95667

Reporters from news organizations can call Patricia Jones 347-306-2442 for interviews. Only messages from the media to this line can be returned.

All public inquiries/requests for assistance should be directed to info@noahswish.org or call 530-622-9313

Pay attention please! Nobody's suggesting housing animals at the Astrodome. Texas animal rescue workers were on hand to take in pets from arriving people, and shelter them nearby.

"If they offered me a seat in a rescue boat but condemned my dogs to stay and die, I'd stay with my dogs and a 12-gauge. No thanks."

Well, if I were in control of the rescue mission I would thank you and ask you if you could please make way for the folks behind you. I'm sure you'll do OK. Next!

The Pinellas County (FL) Humane Society is sending people to pick up as many stranded pets as they can and bring them back to Florida. The pets will be cared for (and hopefully returned to their owners or adopted) and will not be euthanized.

I learned this tonight from a friend whose co-worker is going the day after tomorrow.

Yes, there are many groups doing that. But the chances of these pets being reunited with their owners are slim. Keeping the pets with their own humans until they are in a location that's under control, is the best approach.

I understand that and that is the basis of my point.

One reason that people don't evacuate for a storm is because they can't take their pets with them. For every animal a person has, there is a 50% less likelihood of them evacuating. Most people don't see their dogs or cats as material posessions and even an emergency won't change that. It doesn't take much to accomodate pets if they are in crates and the owners look after them. Most counties in FL are starting to have pet friendly shelters because of this.

I hope you would. That is why you would get that response. You sound strong and determined. But not everyone would. If you can't take a compliment you have real problems. But you would have to live with the consequence of your decisions. I'm sure that you would do that as well, right?
