I understand short selling and this variant and both are among the most destructive forces arrayed against investors. Both should be banned.
Essentially it is the shifting of the supply curve using stocks which are almost always "borrowed" from margin investors. There is no reason a person would allow their stocks to be used to do this and it is brokers who do it without the permission of the real owners.
Other capitalist nations do not allow this blatant and fraudulent abuse of fiduciary responsibility on the part of brokers.
If these crooks want to bet against stocks let them do it in a way which does not BY ITS VERY NATURE cheat real investors, let them buy puts or sell calls.
