Having grown up in the projects of Washington, D.C. and surrounding areas, and as a former gang member during that time, I can attest to and confirm the "sense-of-life" realization the author's wife experienced. I understand the mentality all too well, and the ugliness, violence, and moral debauchery that springs from it.
