Because there is a lot of talk about race and "poor" etc., and if you have been listening, a lot of hysteria going on regarding the images. A breakdown of demographics is interesting to look at to help separate fact from fiction.

If you do not find the info interesting, move onto another topic.

The problem is that the people remaining in the city aren't the same as the people who were there before. Being well-educated or middle-class or above, and probably being white, meant you were much, much more likely to get out of Dodge before the hurricane.

The stated demographic statistics don't tell the whole story, far from it. The portion of the population that fled (3/4ths seem to have fled pre-hurricane) was most likely disproportionately white and wealthier than those who remained, so the remnant population in NO when it flooded was much more black and poor than the census figures.

The weird breakdown of rich whites/high rate of college degrees vs poor blacks is a characteristic of many cities, like New York or even San Francisco for instance. These urban areas often have a pretty intense class split, compared to the suburbs, which tend to be more even.

Your post assumes the demographics of those those left in NO follows a standard normal curve with the population being all of those left in NO. Your post assumes being poor is distributed evenly throughout the race distribution throughout the entire population of the city of NO. I think you should look at your assumptions again.
