This email does not look good for rebuilding New Orleans on its flooded site. If the flood waters inside the levees are that polluted, the whole country does not have the money to decontaminate the site. Man's laws can be waived, but not the laws of nature. That high a concentration of pollutants means rebuilding on such soil will just kill or permanently sicken/injure anyone who dares live there.

"*** called to say that he may not get to email for a few days. He and a colleague are going into New Orleans tomorrow to gather water samples;

seems there's a possibility that the floodwaters in the city are so polluted that pumping them into either river or lake may wind up killing off a whole lotta fish in the Gulf.

Apparently *** will gather his samples by leaning out the door of a Coast Guard helicopter and dropping the collection vials into the water below...all the while hoping that no armed thugs think he'd make an amusing target ...

The water is just going to get worse, if not from chemical pollutants but from the thousands of corpses, many of which we won't recover for weeks.
