But they had 5 days before the storm to plan for the worst and obviously they should have.

Two days and there was sincere doubt about the weather models that were indicating an incredible intensification for the storm. The initial track was into the Florida panhandle, it shifted. The same models predicted that the storm was going to dip down into the Keys and intensify to a cat 3 in less than eight hours.

If you've got a perfect crystal ball for predicting these things, cough it up.

Press Release - (PRNewswire) - When Hurricane Katrina emerged as this summer's 11th named storm, The Weather Channel was on the scene with continuous coverage of the storm's dangerous lifespan as it escalated. Experts at the all-weather channel knew, from the very earliest stages, that Katrina would be one of the worst hurricanes they had seen in many years.

I don't need a crystal ball. I have cable.

There was enough good warning for all sensible people to leave on Friday. I would have.

I've been through many hurricanes. I have evacuated for one. Hugo.

You need to evacuate before the official announcement is made. Once they say 'RUN !!', it's too late. Too late to run easy anyway, and there is the danger of being stuck in traffic and doing the storm in a car.

Run soon, before it becomes obvious to everyone that running is the best option. Or stay put prepared for the worst.
