UGH! Richard Simmons. Well, for all his strange behavior, he is a good person I think.
I don't care what anyone says...MSM, politicians and even Freepers ...the fault lays on the Governor and Mayor of NO...you don't see these same kind of stories coming out of Ms or Al..and they, especially Ms was hit harder...
My (granted somewhat limited) knowledge of emergency command and control centers for emergencies is that they are usually equipped with emergency power as well as access to media coverage (i.e., TVs). If a TV screen somewhere in the room has a picture of people on an overpass, that could be easily recognized. Not to mention the fact that there was at least one policeman aimlessly wandering on the bridge who could have alerted his superiors. If the command and control centers weren't properly equipped and staffed, I'd lay that at the feet of the governor and mayor, not the media, and I offer the same opinion for the lack of emergency planning before the hurricane.
FEMA should have sent Simmons to the superdome to lead an aerobics class, that would have calmed the people there.
I want to know how the guy at the convention center, rolling around that big screen TV, is going to get on the helicopter.
And why is Shep talking about the busses going to the conv. center? We just saw that they are evacuating by helicopters.
Since the city has to be evacuated, probably for the remainder of the year, they are making up for their yearly numbers in advance...
Not to mention all of the misery he has witnessed over the last few days.
Thanks for that info.
This FReeper has it right, I think:

I saw this last Sunday and have been noting it since then. And I can even tell you the reason why SHE did this. After last year's failed evacuation of New Orelans when Hurricane Ivan "didn't hit," the city planners took a lot of heat for inconveniencing people. She waited for someone else to take the responsibilty so she could blame them if Katrina didn't hit. She noted that Bush not only ordered the evacs, but he also declared a state of emergency before she did.
From the start this crisis has been handled, politically. She failed to use the national guard in its proper "law enforecment" role because she didn't want to be held responsible for Guardsmen shooting "poor, black people." How could she even order this when her own AG and Mayor were helping to justify this looting under a "need to survive."
The President cannot do that. Lobby your Congresscritters and your state govt.
You hit the nail on the head there.
My father was head of a quartermaster corp in WWII...."an Army moves on it's belly"....Preparations must be made ahead of time....Sounds to me they didn't call them up until all the supplies were in place. Remember each person going into the area must be fed and watered too.
they are first evacuating medical needs people, women and children, the elderly, by chopper. the buses are going to move in soon to take out able bodied en masse.
Coast Guard called back for Q&A. Asking about where they're doing the rescues. Missed the answers.
Red Cross asked about insta-volunteers. No numbers, but they're working with other agencies to plug them in.
End of briefing.
Though the flipside of it is that these folks were actually in greater danger from violence, if not from deprivation.
It was a bad decision. But I have heard that they were actually clearing some of those people out to make room for response personnel, not to evac gov't personnel.
But, from the standpoint of the message it sent to those who had been waiting for days, it was a horrible decision.
Considering the president declared LA a state of emergency before the storm even hit, had to call to practically order the mayor to order an evacuation of NO, and put the full resources of the federal government behind the relief effort, it is evident that he did everything he could do and the Mayor did very little pre-planning.
New Orlean's ads before the storm were telling people if they evacuated and left their pets behind, they would be prosecuted for animal abandonment if appropriate arrangements were not made. Talk about discouraging people from leaving!
LOL Sounds like she has been Cindy-rized. IF she has ever voted, it went to the gov and mayor that has her in this sad predicament and she is too ignorant to realize it.
Sometimes it's very good to be a woman.
HEADS UP! MSNBC has military press conf on NOW- this guy is taking no @#$% from anyone.
