Governor: Tax Hike Possible if Prop. 76 Fails (Schwarzenegger)
Los Angeles Times ^ | September 2, 2005 | Peter Nicholas

Posted on 09/02/2005 2:59:40 PM PDT by calcowgirl

SACRAMENTO -- Facing widespread opposition to his special election, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Friday that if voters reject a proposed spending restraint on the November ballot, he might be forced to raise taxes.

Schwarzenegger previewed a campaign theme in a morning radio interview, predicting that new taxes might be the only alternative if voters reject Proposition 76, the "Live Within Our Means" act.

Asked on Sacramento station KTKZ-1380 AM what he might do to avert future budget deficits if the spending control is defeated, Schwarzenegger said:

"Then we have to look at raising taxes, because this is the only option we have, in order to create the money. And this is why I tell people vote yes on Proposition 76 and make sure that we do everything that we can to pass this proposition so that we force our legislators once and for all to live within their means and not to continue spending money and to keep making promises to people that they can't keep."

Schwarzenegger's comments came amid a new statewide poll showing little appetite for the Nov. 8 special election that he depicts as central to his "year of reform" agenda.

LOL -

".....his actions ARE those of a democrat! "

Tom is supporting Democrats propositions these days ?

"IMO, if Arnold starts governing like the fiscal conservative he campaigned as, he will get support."

You really don't believe that do you ? Arnold never got any respect from the fanatical right wing before the election, do you seriously think they will give him any now whatever way he governs ?

" Arnold never got any respect from the fanatical right wing before the election..."

Your coining of such an extreme leftist term, and daring to use it openly on a conservative site pretty well blows whatever cover you have. Free sex, free love, free money, right? Anybody that fails to support those basic rights is a member of the 'fanatical right.'

LOL - You know nothing of me, my friend.

But it is interesting - Do you not believe that "fanatical conservatives" exist, as opposed to simply people who hold conservative values ?

Your implication was that those who failed to support Arnold are the 'fanatical right.'

Anyone with a functioning brain could see that Arnold is a fascist/socialist thug. It requires no fanaticism to resist him and all he stands for.

Sorry - you are simply wrong - It is YOU who jumped to the wrong conclusion.

But please answer my previous question -

Do you not believe that "fanatical conservatives" exist, as opposed to simply people who hold conservative values ?

'Fanatical conservative' is an oxy-moron.

Fanaticism is intrinsically leftist, while conservatism is a resistance to alteration of our culture and economic system. The left and the right represent an attack on the statis quo.

You need to read your response to calcowgirl's #121

There are bowling fanatics, Red Socks Fanatics, "Save the Earth" fanatics, and just about any other cause or interest fanatics and you are seriously trying to tell me there can't be fanatical conservatives ?

FRom a ship at sea, sailing North to Alaska..
I BUMP that comment #119 aswell..

Thanks calcowgirl!!

For folks that share a common cause.. some folks sure do like to bendover, turn their heads away and cough a lot when petty deatils like the budget ballooning, a sizeable deficit lingering,, a continuation of GReens and c'Rats getting appointed to positions that conservatives aren't good enough to fill for some reason, etc adnauseum, , and if anyone mentions bipartisanship, I will hurl,

It makes it seem like they want to have someone convenient to blame if the voters reject the current slate of reforms on the upcoming ballot in November.

I ask why a majority of Independent and crossover dem voters have now abandoned the very same person they wanted to change change change things. This likelihood rubbed me the wrong way from the get go and is pl;aying itself out as things progress..

Oh, and notice how Tom and his supporters are damned if we do or damned if we don't agree with anything around here to some folks or actually support some of the reforms. LOL

Arnold never got any respect from the fanatical right wing before the election, do you seriously think they will give him any now whatever way he governs ?

Fanatical right wing ? The only fanatics I see here are those who consistently refuse to look at individual issues and try to turn every discussion into one about McClintock. (that would include you, RS). Those "fanatics" appear to hold few "right wing" beliefs at all.

I think it is fanatical for people to support actions of the action-hero, despite the substance of the issue. When Gray Davis proposed borrowing, Republicans ardently opposed it. When Schwarzenegger proposed borrowing, the fanatical action-hero followers (FAFs) supported it. When Gray Davis increased spending, Republicans screamed. When Schwarzenegger increased spending, the FAFs cheer his passing of an on-time budget. When Schwarzenegger promotes leftists to high positions, the FAFs are silent. When he socialized one-fifth of the land in California, FAFs were silent. When Arnold tried to trump Bush by publishing an editorial supporting the UN Global Warming agenda, the FAFs were silent. Now he just signed a letter to Bush urging the signing of the Law of the Sea Treaty! Etc. etc. etc.

The only fanatics, IMO, are those who seem to embrace every leftist position introduced by this Governor and try to paint those who support a fiscally conservative agenda as right-wing-whackos.

You are entitled to follow a Trojan Horse if you so choose.

"Fanatical right wing ?"

So, are you joining those who do not believe that a fanatical right-wing exists ?

Lets see, ( to pick some extreme examples ) are those who blow up abortion clinics and kill doctors part of "main-stream" conservatism now ?

"...and try to paint those who support a fiscally conservative agenda as right-wing-whackos."

Then it looks as if I don't fit the mold - I have no problem with supporting a fiscally conservative agenda.

Making that happen without a magic wand is another story - you don't do it by simply laying out your agenda and expect that those opposed to it will have an epiphany and lo... it becomes law. Reality MUST play a part in making changes.

Excellent post, as usual. It's difficult to imagine, but Arnold does seem to still have a few Kool-Aid drinkers clinging to his coattails. RS is apparently one of the few true believers left.

Anyone that hasn't figured out by now that Arnold is a total bust, is really beyond rational discussion. Arnold has failed to produce on his promises. Long on talk but lacking the conviction and character to take the strong actions required, he has revealed himself to be just another in a long line of do-nothing politicians.

He has only himself to blame for missing a golden opportunity to establish himself as the leader of California's restoration. Now he will seen for what he is--a part of California's problem.

Again with the expectations of the "magic wand" - Dosen't anyone recall his campaign statements to the effect that if he can't get results through the legislature that he will go the proposition route ?

Isn't that what he is doing ?

Again, you need to work on that "reading comprehension" thing.

I said: "IMO, if Arnold starts governing like the fiscal conservative he campaigned as, he will get support."

You said: "You really don't believe that do you ? Arnold never got any respect from the fanatical right wing before the election, do you seriously think they will give him any now whatever way he governs ?"

Are you now suggesting that those who oppose Arnold's leftist fiscal actions are the same as those blowing up abortion clinics?

Your tagline: RS ("I took the drugs because I liked them and I found excuses to take them, so I'm not weaseling. ")

Perhaps you should give up the hallucinogens.
