Governor: Tax Hike Possible if Prop. 76 Fails (Schwarzenegger)
Los Angeles Times ^ | September 2, 2005 | Peter Nicholas

SACRAMENTO -- Facing widespread opposition to his special election, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Friday that if voters reject a proposed spending restraint on the November ballot, he might be forced to raise taxes.

Schwarzenegger previewed a campaign theme in a morning radio interview, predicting that new taxes might be the only alternative if voters reject Proposition 76, the "Live Within Our Means" act.

Asked on Sacramento station KTKZ-1380 AM what he might do to avert future budget deficits if the spending control is defeated, Schwarzenegger said:

"Then we have to look at raising taxes, because this is the only option we have, in order to create the money. And this is why I tell people vote yes on Proposition 76 and make sure that we do everything that we can to pass this proposition so that we force our legislators once and for all to live within their means and not to continue spending money and to keep making promises to people that they can't keep."

Schwarzenegger's comments came amid a new statewide poll showing little appetite for the Nov. 8 special election that he depicts as central to his "year of reform" agenda.

Liberalism is the enemy.
If one looks at the actions they would see a Trojan horse.
Instead, some find solace in a Name(R).

That was an outstandingly deep analysis of the shituation, but my presumptions are more shallow and based on my study of the human nature of people in politics that I've observed up close and personal.

Where politicians are concerned, especially those who are, or are closely tied to celebrities, I do not put ANY stock in their having an altruistic bone in their bodies! As you may have noticed, I'm basing a lot of my far reaching prediction of A.S. dropping out of politics without running in 2006 on what Jesse Ventura did, plus some lesser "politicians" that I have known and known of personally and how they view the world and how they've acted in the face of adversity.

This type of "politician" has a desperate, seething need to feel loved by more than just his circle of friends/supporters, but MUST be loved by EVERYBODY!!! They cannot tolerate the feeling of loss of total support and this is especially true with someone who has recieved the adulation of a movie star/action hero like Jesse, but especially Arnold!

They have no use for and will not invest their time and resources for very long in an effort that is as emotionally volitile and fickle as CA politics. Every "hit" by a cheap shot commercial is almost a kill shot to such a psyche! The hedonistic search for hero worship from massive audiences is a drug and the process of withdrawal is sudden, deadly and terminal to the celebrity/politicians political interests.

I can see it in Arnold's face and in his changed expressions! He's losing interest in the game!! He's going to abandon all the people of CA because he feels too many are abandoning him!!! He feels like the leader who glanced back and suddenly discovered that NO ONE IS FOLLOWING!!!

The people are now ready for "policy wonks" again. Davis was one and they fired him, but the big "flash in the pan" Schwartzenegger was even worse! Now they're ready to settle back to let someone who appears serious take care of the pesky business of government!

Since the stupid CAGOP has castrated themselves by pre-endorsing A.S. who will not be running, Angelides will walk in to the Governor's office unopposed!!! McClintock will have a blast crippling John Garamendi once and for all and will have to wait till 2010 to whip Angelides who will be just as bad a Governor as Davis was.

There will never be another Recall in CA in our lifetimes as Californians feel they've "been there-done that!"

Ouch, I hate doing that

As long as you keep a cool head and a live round in the chamber after each accidental discharge it doesn't matter.

Just don't stagger around in a daze of confused embarrassment because you can be damned sure Canticle_of_Deborah has reloaded and is drawing a bead.

Spoken like a true interloper, one seeking to cause further disruption and fighting. Way to go, Gladys.

Unlike the gaggle which depends upon itself for support and contributes naught but a barrage of insults directed at the governor?

Gladys Kravitz. Gladys was the nagging, irrepressibly nosy neighbor in "Bewitched". There, you learned something.

You didn't learn anything? Of course, Gladys could never see anything wrong with herself, either.

I confess. I'm guilty. I didn't intend to make matters worse than they already were. My poorly composed attempt at a humorous reminder should have read:

Impatience with delays in the system when posting a reply back to the board is frequently the cause for double postings. Those delays aren't always do to slow servers. On some occassions, when two individuals are involved in a juvenile, vitriolic, ad hominem exchange, the moderators may intervien to review each reply as it is sent to the server before the server posts the reply back to the board. This process is usually triggered when one of the participants files a grievence. This may have been the case in your exchange with Deborah.

If that his threat, conservatives will stay home this November AND next November. We don't need a RINO raising our already sky-high taxes HIGHER!

Voters aren't stupid. I could live with a weak spending cap but I don't think this one will actually restrain government spending. Not that Arnold's spokesmen have actually EVER made that point. I don't recall it. So if we don't vote for this we get higher taxes later? Thanks but no thanks Arnold!

"The anti-Arnie and the union thugs, hand in hand to negate any executive accomplishment."

You got that right - strange bedfellows, but I suppose the Dems don't care if they sucker fanatical conservatives into doing their dirty work for them - I'm sure they get a good laugh out of it.
The funniest part of it is that some here have rationalized Tom's support of Arnold's props, but others want Arnold to bail, giving control over the budget back to the Dems, and negating those same props. Bizzare !

If that is your impression of what has been posted here, I suggest you develop some reading comprehension skills. You must have missed the subject of the thread--his actions ARE those of a democrat!

Arnold: "Then we have to look at raising taxes, because this is the only option we have, in order to create the money."
Wow! Raise taxes and create money! You expect others to support this BS? What happened to CUT, CUT, CUT?

You folks who see nothing wrong with the LEFTIST actions by this governor are becoming more and more transparent. IMO, if Arnold starts governing like the fiscal conservative he campaigned as, he will get support. If not, his actions will continue to be criticized.
