Barbour is doing fine. He can be one of the other officials.
I nominate Zell Miller for the other one!

This would be a brilliant idea. No one is going to confuse Governor Blanco or Mayor Nagin with Rudy Guliani or Jeb Bush. It's time to put the grownups in charge.
Note that Mississippi and Alabama do not seem to have these leadership problems at the state level. Haley Barbour in particular has been very strong.

I don't think Zell has the relevant experience in this case.

IIRC, there is a big Seabee base at Gulfport. With those "Can Do" boys on the scene, I'm sure the situation is well in hand. I've received photos over the past couple of days of the damage at Keesler AFB. It's a real mess.

Putting Rudy in charge would be a BRILLIANT idea! Some accuse him of being a RINO (though I don't agree with that at all), but one and all agree that Giuliani knows how to kick butt and take names. Putting him in charge of the rescue and reconstruction effort will probably accelerate the whole reconstruction effort by a good month, and may save some of those poor souls who are still clinging to life in their attics. Do it!!!

"But, the Pentagon is making sure that any military assets work for civilian authority."
Well, that's a crying shame because the state and locals are a bunch of incompetents. even the NO mayor said he'd be happy to have the Lt Gen in charge of the whole thing. He's in over his head.

Giuliani would be a Godsend.

Yes, Rudy would shine. And he'll be perfect. Here's hoping.

Jeb has a state to run. Rudy's on the rubber chicken circuit.

Makes sense. I was just thinking the mayor of New Orleans is certainly no Rudolph Giuliani. He, indeed, should be put in control of this thing.
To: AmishDude
The difference is that Jeb has a competent staff and he doesn't have to be there to tell them what to do. We could spare him even with the relief effort in South Florida underway. If Barbour and what's-her-name aren't in close contact with Jeb as much as they are with George, it is their own damned loss.

Jeb may have some of his key staff helping out. That wouldn't make the national news.

Finally. I can't take many more appearances by Ms. Governor or Mayor Hate-Whitey or Senator Ima Bitch-Landrieu.
These clowns need to be sent packing and someone who is effective needs to take charge. And the head of FEMA needs to go. Now. He's pathetic.

Like in the heat of battle, you make do with the resources and command that you have on-site.
There is presently no one in command. That's the problem.
To: WOSG
I think it's just a formality because of the need to not put the military in charge of a domestic operation. In this case I believe the 3-star technically reports to FEMA but that's just a formality, I'm sure.
