Racism is partly to blame for the deadly aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said, calling President Bush's response to the disaster "incompetent."
"Today, as the President comes to Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi for his ceremonial trip to look at the victims of the devastation, he would do well to have a plan more significant than a ceremonial tour," Jackson said Friday.
"His whole response is unacceptable."
Bush has acknowledged that the federal response has not been acceptable, but promised that the government would get supplies to survivors and crack down on violence in New Orleans.
Jackson questioned why Bush has not named blacks to top positions in the federal response to the disaster, particularly when the majority of victims remaining stranded in New Orleans are black: "How can blacks be locked out of the leadership, and trapped in the suffering?"
"It is that lack of sensitivity and compassion that represents a kind of incompetence."
U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Russell Honore, head of the military task force overseeing operations in the three states, is black. His task force is providing search and rescue, medical help and sending supplies to the three states in support of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Jackson was in Baton Rouge to take part in a local project using a caravan of buses to pick up people stranded in New Orleans and transport them out. He spoke at a news conference at the state emergency center.
The civil rights leader said the flooding that caused thousands to be trapped inside the city was caused by a lack of federal funding for its levee system and hurricane planning. The resulting tragedy, he said, has largely hit New Orleans' black residents, because they were too poor to evacuate before the storm hit.
"There's a historical indifference to the pain of poor people and black people" in this country, he said.
Jackson also said the news media has "criminalized the people of New Orleans" by focusing on violence in the city.

Most school buses are automatic. I could drive one. Some twenty year old drove his family and other refugees to Texas in one. Any able bodied person with a driver's license could have driven those things. So sad. It's on Drudge now too.

No, it's being kept "down on the plantation" by continuing to vote for the poverty pimps that keep people in that condition. Hey Jesse! why aren't you ragging on your pal the mayor and your pal the governor? Why aren't you questioning their "sensitivity"? Where was your concerned voice on Sunday before this storm hit? I know, you were kissing up to someone else in a Venezuela, that's right! Why didn't your friends call for all the buses to get loaded up Saturday and Sunday? Why didn't they call for the Louisiana National Guard before the storm hit? Why aren't you blasting the mayor for his foul mouthed denigration of the President of our country? I sent money on Tuesday already to help, not because I am white, but because I care.
How many pounds of food and water did the Rainbow collation disaster relief fund send in and when did it get there.
It's Jackson's own methods of using blacks for his agenda that may very well have been at the root of why some blacks in the area didn't prepare for this disaster. His willingness to promote dependence (for his own gain) among poor blacks is more to blame than any response by the feds/Bush.

Jackson did nothing, NOTHING. His opinion yesterday was that he didn't believe people in New Orleans were not being helped because of their race. I guess somebody told him he needed to change his mind.

Yeah, now the problem is the skin color of the Federal relief officials. Shut up, Jesse, your line is getting old. You've been around 40 years, and the poor people of New Orleans are still poor, while you and your buddies have made millions.

That’s all I can think of.
I can remember back to probably 1954 when I first noticed all the hurricane preparedness stuff they’d print on grocery bags, etc, as you approached hurricane season.
The instructions were pretty straight-forward, and haven’t changed a bit in over 50 years as far as I know.
The very first warning was – “If you live in low lying areas that are susceptible to flooding, or if you live in coastal areas susceptible to storm surge – GET OUT. Seek high ground.
The second warning was – “If you decide to stay, seek high ground and make sure you have provisions for a MINIMUM of three days.
The emergency organizations were quite specific that you would most likely NOT be contacted or helped in any way, so be prepared to survive for a MINIMUM of three days on your own.
Then they’d run down the provisions you should stock:
Water, water filters and/or purification tablets, food, first aid kit, supply of whatever-medicine you might need, batteries, flashlight, transistor radio, insect repellent, sturdy shoes, protective clothing, work gloves – on and on.
So where are we at now? I want the reporters to ask the people there, “where is your water/food supply? Where are your batteries and radio so you could stay informed? Where is your medicine?
I already know the answer – there is none. That’s because they ignored the first warning – “GET OUT.” Then they ignored the second – “seek high ground and have provisions.”
They did no preparation of any sort. They did what they have probably done for three or four generations – let someone else take care of it FOR them.
Now, in an obscene twist, productive Texans are bussing them in so they can lounge around in the Astrodome on cots eating Whataburgers and playing checkers and cards while productive/responsible America goes to work.
Great. Those are the sort of people (Jesse Jackson-types) that need to be in “top” positions.

Uh, mebbe `cause 1.) nationally qualified black people are tired of being called "Aunt Jemimas" (Condy Rice) and "plantation slaves" (Colin Powell) by his fellow Democrats; and, 2.) local black people are currently engaged in 'private enterprises'.
Surely Jesse can appreciate #2.
