All the news I am getting here is New Orleans and fuel shortages. (In Atlanta for a few months) I just recieved a link on the FR.

I feel sorry for the folks in Biloxi and I know people that lost their house in Gulfport.

Take a look at the date of this article in the Houston Chronicle:

Houston Chronicle 12/01/01

KEEPING ITS HEAD ABOVE WATER By ERIC BERGER; Houston Chronicle Science Writer
New Orleans faces doomsday scenario

"New Orleans is sinking.

And its main buffer from a hurricane, the protective Mississippi River delta, is quickly eroding away, leaving the historic city perilously close to disaster.

So vulnerable, in fact, that earlier this year the Federal Emergency Management Agency ranked the potential damage to New Orleans as among the three likeliest, most catastrophic disasters facing this country."

There you have it: Since 2001...did FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers prepare for this?
We shall see...but people will not be able to return to New Orleans for possibly 4 months

IOW we have a city in ruins and the only thing CNN is worried about is when do the welfare checks get delivered.

I think Dade, Broward and Palm Beach all have high frequency disasters to hone their plans and learn from their mistakes. Disasters of this scale in the Bay Area CA come once every 25 years.

Suffice to say I have no confidence in local government and plan to be self-reliant. But most of my neighbors do not have a similar mindset.

This should be a wake up call to the entire world.....the PLANTATION mentality is a disaster.....don't turn your people into what these poor black welfare people turned into...spoiled children with no morals.

They struggle in adversity, but rise to the challenge every time,

Given the scenes of mass looting, and reports of rapes and murders and snipers shooting at rescuers removing patients from hospitals, I'd say that the problem is exactly that Americans (at least some of you) AREN'T rising to the challenge.

This is when that report was PUBLISHED. It has been going on from before.

There is an excellent graphic from hurricane GEORGES showing how this is OLD news.

The mayor of New Orleans SHOULD be compared to other cities. New Orleans is NOT unique in regards to municipal governance. Other Mayors have stepped up.

OTHER GOVERNORS have stepped up.

Why is LA given a free pass by the MSM in the incompetence department? (three guesses and first two don't count.)

New Orleans IS a French city. It's always been a decadent, disgusting place with Royal Street riches and Bourbon Street evil.....right next to each other.

But many have also been shocked by the images of disorder beamed around the world -- looters roaming the debris-strewn streets and thousands of people gathered in New Orleans waiting for the authorities to provide food, water and other aid.

New Orleans was in the top 20 or so worst crime cities in the US. The crime rate there has probably gone down due to the scarcity of victims.

Sri Lanka is a poor country fighting a war with the terrorist Tamil Tigers. They can ill afford to divert money from that war.

The mere fact that they DID offer help, no matterhow little, is somehing to commend, not criticize.

"A modern metropolis sinking in water and into anarchy -- it is a really cruel spectacle for a champion of security like Bush," France's left-leaning Liberation newspaper said. "(Al Qaeda leader Osama) bin Laden, nice and dry in his hideaway, must be killing himself laughing."

If the scum-sucking french can dish it out, then they can surely take it.

"I'm gathering supplies..."

Good for you. I was puzzled at the reports that NO was out of food and water after only two days. What household with any sense doesn't stockpile food and water? For that matter, why don't all those children wandering around on the streets have shoes?

In west Texas, most of us could hole up for days, maybe months.

Water's cheap---no one can drink a nickles' worth of it.
Bleach is cheap----a gallon at .99 will sterilize a great deal of water at 8 drops of bleach per gallon.

Since your'e stocking up, think Spam (we call it Near Steer), tuna, salmon and anything high protein that doesn't require refrideration. After that, think Sterno (solid alcohol) One can cook food using it without getting asphixiated or risking burning down the building. Oh, and don't forget the guns and ammo!

Someone posted the top 10 most violent cities in the US. New Orleans was #7.

I grew up near #6 (Hartford CT).

The truth is that not one tourist in the tsunami ravaged islands was raped or mugged. The islanders didn't turn on each other like pack animals fighting for bones - this sh*t is insane. I say let 'em rot.

We need to take a breath and remind the world that NO is the exception.

You think it would be different in Atlanta? Detriot, LA?

The terrorists have just found another way to try to bring this country to its knees. A small dirty bomb in a couple of big cities and we will have unimaginable problems.

My Boy Scout survival training kicked in on 9/12/01, but I had only planned for 3 or so days, though I still had some Y2K and 'Quake stockpiles.

Have to get more ammo and a scattergun. Handguns are fine for personal defense, but if there is a mob of looters, a pump-action shotgun is probably the better tool. Gonna hit the Labor Day sales at the sporting goods stores tomorrow.

The Hollywood left could afford to relocate all these people to Big Sur. Airconditioning/heating wouldn't be a big problem there. In fact, Martin Sheen could pay for it himself...
