Yesterday they were saying they wouldn't turn anyone away.

And you took that to mean that they had an infinite amount of space to house refugees? I think between the floor and the ceiling, there is probably only so much room.

Good ideas.

The Beaumont Civic Center can hold 6,500. That is a shorter drive from NO.

I am sure there are similar centers in Galveston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, etc.

This has got to be complete fubar... I live in Houston and just saw on a local channel that they're running low of supplies in there as well. Supposedly only a few thousand are actually inside.

Where did they all come from?

From a small town named Houston. Heard of it?

SA mayor said some 200 were being flown in - more coming later. Didn't say how for others coming. But they'll be safe, dry, fed, and welcomed.

Let's pray that all the refugees are resettled with real houses and real jobs in the coming few years, but just in case that does not turn out to be the case, Michael Savage's suggestion might just make sense. Empty military installations might just be needed.

It's probably a good idea to spread the people out in different centers. Tens of thousands in one place is not a good idea.

"Cities all over Texas immediately turn away and look busy..."

What a foolish thing to say, we have some in our city which is 150 miles to the West of Houston!

Welcome newbie..

Of course, many are coming to Dallas. Won der how many of he NOLA diaspora will ever go back. It begins to look like a year before the city will be habitable. More damage couldn't have been done if it had been bombed by a squadron of B 52s.

God Bless Texas. We visited there a few years ago and met the nicest people on earth. Truly a few angels reside there :) ...

Houston can take over all the housing currently in the hands of illegals. That should be a quarter mil or so.

Was there a large illegal popultion at New Orleans?

Berkely was another good suggestion. They and San Francisco should be able to pony-up for a hundred thou or so.

but doesn't offer up any venues in Austin

There are no facilities in Austin. Think before you criticize. The astros left for Enron field and in San Antonio, the spurs left the alamo dome empty for a new place too. If the Kingdome and the Silverdome were still standing, those would have been useful. Austin does not have a dome.

"Michael Savage has suggested that Bush immediately stop his plan to close the many large U.S. military bases that already have infrastructure in place and use them to house these desperate refugees."

I not crazy about the idea. Even the minority that are not being used now don’t have the infrastructure for refugees. They just have shelter. Some are far away from population centers. No phones, utilities, bedding, food, organization or transportation. Worse, they’d be isolated without the contact with society needed to get them back into it.

I’d rather see them virtually dumped off at every church, school and jail across the country first. But if even that won’t handle the numbers, sure make them a military responsibility.

Send them to Camp Casey. Joan Baez can sing them to sleep.

Dumb question, what happens to these 25,000 people now? Do they stay in the Astrodome and get fed 25,000 take out meals everyday or do they start new lives in Houston?

According to that picuture, the space is being used.

But since you've raised the issue, if the 30,000 or so Lakewood members are being called upon to share their vast square footage, then surely the 600,000 Catholics, 400,000 Baptists and 200,000 Methodists can called upon to donate some of the meager square footage in their minichurches.
