Sorry, but with the scale of death and destruction, the very LAST thought on my mind is a pet and the potential for future harm to the kid from the additional trauma.

But the pet was not the last thing on the little boys mind. It was probably all he had left. If he was boarding a bus wasn't it for evacuation? There should have been some way of dealing with it at the shelter they were going to. I vote for letting him keep it.
