Lisa Stark on ABC is now saying that the federal govt. can act only if the state requests help first, and this is one of the main reasons for the "slow" federal response.

If none of my NOLA office co-workers take me up on it, I have some room (a lot of room, actually) at my place in Allen. I have offered to my employer, first but I don;t know if anyone will NEED to take me up on it.
My company is doing the right thing: "You have a job. You have benefits. Don't worry about getting a check. Don't worry about your vacation or sick time; take as much time as you need. Can we help you find a place to live? Here is the contact for the EAP counselors." And so on.

Not to dismiss this calamity as anything less than the disaster that it is... but on 9/11, politicians jumped all over themselves to get an average of over $1M per victim into the hands of the families. I wonder if anyone will dare to suggest something similar in this situation. I wonder if anyone else would have the nerve to say, "Bad idea."
