Thanks again.
seriosuly, they can't get to these people at the hospitals calling into OReilly and Rita Cosby pleading for help - but they spend effort rescuing Fats Domino?
The local and state govt had 40 years to prepare for this storm. Now there will be hearings and Congressmen and the public being incredulous that the levees were only designed to handle Class 3 hurricanes. Duh? Everyone who knows anything about N.O. has always known that. Just like no city can withstand a Class 5 tornado and San Francisco can't stand a 8.5 earthquake. No one plans for a worst case disaster.
What will come out of this is Congress will insist the levees, pumps and electrical system be engineered to withstand a Class 5 hurricane. And you and I will get to pay for it.
The major mistakes I see are
a) no Guiliani style leadership in the city
b) no plan for emergency massive levee repairs by Corp of Engr
c) insufficient plan to evacuate the city early enough and ensure everyone got out
d) no plan to impose real martial law and ensure order
There is plenty of blame to go around but President Bush would be pretty far down the list
"Yep. That should have solved the problem right there. It should be a piece of cake to solve all the problems of one of the largest cities in America being wiped out, and 90,000 square miles of populated shoreline erased from the map. I just can't understand why 4 days into the greatest natural disaster in this nation's history we don't have federal employees planting rose bushes along city streets"
Nice sarcasm, but completely off base. We got aid to thailand faster than this. Inexcusable.
"Did anybody catch Keith Oberman trashing Rice, Bush and everybody in the admin--"
It's way past time to stop taking what Keith Olbermann says seriously. All we're doing is increasing his audience by watching him. Is the Secretary of State responsible for disaster relief? What a putz.
"To: Knitting A Conundrum
Some MREs suck, some are ok
Where do you purchase yours?
This week has convinced me to add to my tornado kit, and MREs are on the list.
Thanks,
Tony"
Turkey tetrazini is pretty good. You can pick them up in various configurations at military surplus stores, or online. Shop around, prices vary.

Though you are welcome to believe that Governor Blanco declaring that things will work out will make that magically true.
Try getting a home loan while asserting your right not to have to sign any documents whatever.
And been forgiven for.
I saw where a man rowed 18 small children out and there was no room for the mothers. He has been caring for the children since.
Outstanding! It has been said disasters bring out the best in some people and the worst in others..we know where that man stands..TALL and PROUD.
Here's a FREEP answer, BTW.
FROM WWL SITE EARLIER TODAY and I find no other update from that page
1:09 P.M. - (AP): The singer known for "Blueberry Hill" and "Ain't That A Shame" has been missing since Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans.
His agent says Fats Domino planned to ride out the storm at his house in a low-lying area of the city with his wife and daughter.
Al Embry says he spoke with Domino Sunday night by phone, but hasn't been able to contact him since. Embry says he would think Domino is safe because "somebody said he was on top of the balcony."
Domino is 77 and has rarely appeared in public in recent years.
I share your frustration, but it just isn't feasible for people to get water and drive to New Orleans with it. I'm only 200 miles away, but I have barely enough gas to get to work tomorrow. And I had to siphon that out of my sister's husband's car.
Everytime they show video of school buses flooded in yards instead of moving them and using them to move people out, I have to resist that whole "how could they screw this up so bad" feeling.
Excuse me, and don't take this personally, but I'm afraid that many don't comprehend just how bad this is. It's not going to be better in 5 days. I don't care what the plan is. I don't care who is in charge. It is physically impossible to make this better in 5 days. It's a miracle that so many have been saved in 5 days. This is akin to a tornado and a flood hitting three states all at once. It's not just New Orleans. People are doing everything they possibly can. It's like complaining that there's not enough being done because Mt. St. Helen's blew up. It's a catastrophe. It's a natural disaster. We are ineffectual against an event of this magnitude. Could things have been different? Sure, people could have evacuated. But they didn't for whatever reason and wouldn't have no matter what. Nothing could have stopped it. Even if nobody died, everything would have been destroyed and there would still be problems with what to do with all the people.
And to think I was getting flamed on the earlier versions of this thread back on Monday when I suggested that the folks lined up waiting to enter reminded me of passengers boarding the Titanic!
((((Group hug))))
Under the circumstances, well ok, just a quick hug!
You've got that right. Hostages are the best currency around for those thugs. Better than food and water.

I am an above average above well informed Freeper and today was the first day I heard of it.
