"Hospitals are trying to evacuate," said Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Cheri Ben-Iesan, spokesman at the city emergency operations center. "At every one of them, there are reports that as the helicopters come in people are shooting at them. There are people just taking pot shots at police and at helicopters, telling them, 'You better come get my family.'"
Richard Zuschlag, president of Acadian Ambulance Service Inc., described the chaos at a suburban hospital.
"We tried to airlift supplies into Kenner Memorial Hospital late last evening and were confronted by an unruly crowd with guns, and the pilots refused to land," he said.
"My medics were crying, screaming for help. When we tried to land at Kenner, my pilots got scared because 100 people were on the helipad and some of them had guns. He was frightened and would not land."

"My medics were crying, screaming for help. When we tried to land at Kenner, my pilots got scared because 100 people were on the helipad and some of them had guns. It's Cobra time!
calling doctors without borders...calling doctors without borders....
*chirp*chirp* chirp*
guess our border is too much for doctors without borders.
AH-1W Super Cobra Gunship
There are supposedly thousands on the way but they're saying it's taking time to get them in place with the support they need so they are not at risk.
ping
When they start shooting at rescue/relief helicopters I'm inclined to agree with the Cobra response. What if they hit a chopper and it crashed into the Superdome?
This cannot be allowed. Who is in charge down there?
They'll need boots on the ground to clear those pads.
There are supposedly thousands on the way but they're saying it's taking time to get them in place with the support they need so they are not at risk. With 10,000 plus national guard and 1500 cops it seems like you would be seeing them on the streets more. And that those could make a safe base for newcomers.
I just don't understand why they don't flood the place with Armed Forces. What are we waiting for?
I have been on the other side of the "shoot" argument but am moving over; this is pure negligence on the Mayor and Gov., it is past time to send in armed force - preferably with marksman skills

Yes it would seem so, but it doesn't appear to be happening yet. Fox correspondent is reporting rapes and shootings in the Superdome. It's becoming the Thunderdome.
Storm victims were raped and beaten, fights and fires broke out, corpses lay out in the open, and rescue helicopters and law enforcement officers were shot at as flooded-out New Orleans descended into anarchy Thursday. "This is a desperate SOS," the mayor said...... About 15,000 to 20,000 people who had taken shelter at the convention center to await buses grew increasingly hostile. Police Chief Eddie Compass said he sent in 88 officers to quell the situation at the building, but they were quickly beaten back by an angry mob.
I saw one woman on Fox being interviewed who said there was a full term pregnant woman in the Superdome who was having contractions....

Sad, so sad. I guess we're not much better than the Muslim wackos we see on TV in the Middle East. A sad day for America.
MSF/DWB North America has basically told the U.S.A. to F'O''
They're not sending one nickle (franc) or one doctor to New Orleans.
As a disgusted and now-litigious MSF/DWB donator, I have that info first hand - DWB Quebec told me do directly - and I'm contributing it as such to this FR discussion.
The helipad covered with people w/ guns? Excuse Me?!! That is totally inexcusable!!!! Why can't the hospital security shoot from inside the hospital and clear the pad?
The governor and mayor ought to be hung, drawn and quartered for this mess!
No plan, no nothin, SHAMEFUL!!!!!!!
A natural disaster happens and these people are acting like the Saint just won the Superbowl.
